Adele and ABBA approach ‘momentous chart battle as albums to release same day’
AdeleandABBAwill come face to face later this year as the superstar musicians look set to release their new albums on the same day.
It’s been a long six years since Adele dropped her last album, 25, in 2015.
Fans are no doubt chomping at the bit to see what the British singer-songwriter has come up with, after releasing hits including Rolling In The Deep, Chasing Pavements and Hello.
But six years seems like a mere couple of minutes when compared with the four decades since ABBA last treated their own fans to any new tunes.
The Swedish pop legends released their eighth album, The Visitors, way back in 1981.
It was thought this would be their final album too, but icons Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad announced this week that they’d reunited for a new album and digital concert.
This week, thrilled fans got to hear two tracks from the upcoming album, Voyage, which is due for release on November 5.
With Adele’s as-yet untitled fourth album due to drop on the same day,The Sun claims: "Adele vs ABBA might just become the most momentous chart battle of all time".
The publication theorised that if the two do decide to push ahead with their chosen release dates, it could lead to a "nail-biting" race for the top spot.
But will the 33-year-old really keep her original release date, going up against perhaps the most famous pop group of all time?
If she does go down that path, it would be a bold but not unprecedented move!
A source told The Sun: "Release dates are carefully planned and record labels usually talk to each other to avoid major artists releasing on the same day.
"But Abba and Adele’s new albums have both been such closely guarded secrets that those conversations haven’t happened."
The source added that it is "not easy" to shift release dates due to scheduling conflicts, including promotion campaigns and TV appearances.
They concluded that record sales will be "absolutely huge", and it is "anyone's guess" who will make No1.
