The images from a police ledger dating from 1890 to 1920 include three convicted of plotting to kill former prime minister David Lloyd George.

It has 500 pages of grainy photos of people found guilty of theft, burglary, shoplifting and assault, including stealing a bag of soot and even for being an “incorrigible rogue”.

The file was discovered by a police officer in Derby over 40 years ago before it was thrown out. Hansons Auctioneers are selling it for his son and it is expected to fetch up to £3,000 on October 19.

Alice Wheeldon, daughter Winnie and son-in-law Alfred Mason were all believed to have been wrongfully convicted of the plot in 1917.
