Coronation Street’s week of high drama begins on Monday and will see Abi (Sally Carman) packing a gun into her bag, hoping to give Seb Franklin (Harry Visinoni) the justice he never got. But the ITV soap boss Iain MacLeod describing upcoming episodes as having the most “ambitious” stunts ever seen on the show, anything could happen. Speaking to Express.co.uk and other media, Iain and stars of the soap talked about how viewers can expect the unexpected. Could Abi end up saving Corey’s life in a staggering twist?
Next week kicks off with Abi watching an Instagram video of Corey packing for Germany and packs a gun into her bag.
Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) discovers what she is planning.
Abi later goes in search of Corey but with everyone in Halloween masks, it proves tricky.
Eventually, she confronts him and as he goads her she prepares to pull the trigger – when the ground gives way beneath them.
The two find themselves trapped in a Victorian sewer, unaware that the gun lies midway between them on the ground.
Talking about what Abi is capable of, actress Sally commented: “Well, I think if you add the initial mindset of someone who’s not thinking straight, who’s distraught, heartbroken or damaged to herself, regardless of losing their son, and then you add a sinkhole to the mix and then you add the murder into the mix – and she doesn’t know what she’s thinking.
“But this gun flicks about quite a lot.
“And there’s the chance to have your say, so you know there’s things discussed down there.”
The actress added: “I really believe that Abi is one of the few characters that can go to those extremes because she’s so emotionally out there and immature emotionally.
“And she’s so passionate and you know she’s got all the feels, she just hasn’t got them in order in anyway.
“And so the thought about bringing a gun into it into the mix, I knew wouldn’t be straightforward.”
“On a specific built set like that, it kind of intensifies the moment anyway.
“And Max [Evans, who plays Corey] is such a good actor.
“And he was really in it, and we both gave it our all really and it was really emotional.”
Could a heartbroken Abi decide during the tragic circumstances that she won’t go through with her plan to kill Corey?
It’s possible Abi will decide she doesn’t want to be the same as her’s son’s killer.
In a dramatic twist, she might even end up saving Corey’s life if he becomes caught in the water.
Whatever happens, it’s bound to be an unforgettable week on the cobbles.
Producer Iain MacLeod said: “We set out to make a week of breathless, brilliant drama – and boy, have our outstanding cast, crew, design team and writers delivered! The week is jam-packed with twists and turns, and astonishing visual spectacle.
“It also has heart, heroism and humour in the most unexpected places.
“I have to say it again: our team has excelled themselves.
“Making any TV in a pandemic is hard, especially if you’ve been doing it non-stop for over 12 months – so I have to tip my hat to everyone for their tireless efforts in continuing to raise the bar, against all the odds.”
Coronation Street continues on Monday at 7.30pm on ITV.
