Coronavirus: Victoria to pay for quarantine of returned travellers

The Victorian government will pay for the cost of quarantining thousands of returned travellers for two weeks in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

People who arrive in Victoria from midnight on Saturday will be housed in hotels, motels, caravan parks and student accommodation, Premier Daniel Andrews said on Friday afternoon.

An estimated 1300 to 2000 people arrive in Melbourne each day and the state has secured 5000 hotel beds ready to use.

"I want people to understand, if you’re travelling through Melbourne and flying to Adelaide, you’ll be quarantined here," Mr Andrews said.

"We will finish up with some Victorians quarantined elsewhere and some other Australians here.

"There will be a bunch of hotel workers who’ve had their hours cut who will be able to return to do this important work."
