Corrie actor Alex Bain says he suffered ‘dark times’ with teasing at school
Coronation Street star Alex Bain has spoken of battling "dark times" at school when he was teased for being a dancer.
The actor, who plays Simon Barlow in the ITV soap, is also a choreographer.
And he revealed the abuse he suffered from fellow pupils and how Corrie and his family helped him to recover.
The 19-year-old star said: "I went through quite a few tough times, even from primary school.
"Being the only male dancer, kids can be horrible.
"I never saw it as bullying, that naive lack of awareness as a child.
"I had a situation in school. It affected me, it affected me a lot more when I got older."
He added: "I have struggled myself with mental health. I am open about it.
"I have been through dark times. If I didn't stick at this job I am in now I would have been lost.
"Corrie has kept me going, my family has kept me going, my daughter has kept me going."
The actor also spoke about receiving fan mail as viewers send him messages.
He said he gets messages from fans thanking him for helping them get through tough times.
Meanwhile, character Simon is facing troubled times when he gets involved in drug running after borrowing money from a gang.
Alex, who has been in the soap for 13 years, said his character is "going to get too deep into things he doesn't even know exist."
He said: "He was involved in situations with gangs before, but it has never been this serious.
"He should be older and should really be trying to steer clear of these things. But he doesn't do that.
"He's vulnerable. The gang fills that void."
Coronation Street airs Mondays and Wednesdays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm with an hour-long episode at 7.30pm on Fridays on ITV.
