Countdown host Anne Robinson stunned as Rachel Riley spells out rude word
NEW Countdown host Anne Robinson was reminded of her old job as The Weakest Link’s Queen of Mean when the letters game show served up the word MEGABITCH.
It is the first naughty anagram to crop up on the Channel 4 favourite since she became presenter three weeks ago.
But acid-tongued Anne, 76, who took over the role from Nick Hewer, appeared to miss the irony.
The episode, to be screened on Monday, features an all-female presenting line up including comedian Rachel Parris as the Dictionary Corner guest.
She says of megabitch: “It would be a good band name.”
Anne responds: “Especially if they were all women.”
The comments come after Rachel Riley pulls out the tiles: CBHEAIGTM.
One contestant came up with the word MEGABIT, but Parris suggested the sought-after nine-letter bonus points winner.
Anne got a reputation for her cutting comments during a dozen years presenting The Weakest Link.
She was accused of making digs about everything from obesity to social class, even asking a beauty therapist: “You’ve not got round to working on yourself?”
Meanwhile Countdown has seen a long list of naughty words over its 39-year history — with some so rude they could not be broadcast.
One of the most infamous was when the late Richard Whitely hosted the show in the Eighties and two contestants picked the word W***ERS.
Cheeky Dictionary Corner guest Gyles Brandreth, whose job it was to explain certain words at the behest of the host, said: “What is Richard Whiteley doing asking for a definition?”
