Derren Brown witnesses woman falling in front of a train

Magician Derren Brown was caught up in an incident at Newcastle station this morning.

The international illusionist, who is currently on a national tour with his production Showman, was on a train at Newcastle Central station this morning when he witnessed a woman fall in front of a train and on to the tracks.

Fearing the worst after the distressing scene, the 50-year-old took to Twitter a few hours after the incident to reflect on the ‘outpouring of care and tenderness’ he had witnessed between fellow train passengers.

He wrote: ‘A woman at Newcastle station stood up from her seat and ended her life in front of an arriving train today, directly opposite the carriage I was in.

‘A cry of horror within, blinds drawn, and an outpouring of care and tenderness between strangers making sure each other was OK.’

LNER confirmed to Metro.co.uk that there was an incident at Newcastle Central station, which it runs, however TV star Derren was luckily mistaken in his assumption.

When contacted for comment, a spokesperson from the North East Ambulance Service said: ‘We were called out just before 11am to a report of a female injured at Central Station in Newcastle.

‘We dispatched one ambulance crew and transported the patient to the RVI.’

A British Transport Police spokesperson also provided a statement to Metro.co.uk, which read: ‘BTP can confirm that a female has been injured after being struck by a train at Newcastle Central railway station on Sunday September 12.

‘Officers from BTP and Northumbria Police attended the incident which was reported to police at 11am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

‘Paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service also attended and the woman was taken to Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she remains in a stable condition.’

Derren, who has also written five books, had just finished the Sunderland leg of his tour, performing at the Empire Theatre from Tuesday September 7 until Saturday September 11.

Showman is the mentalist’s first new show in six years, and he has won Olivier awards for past productions including 2012’s Svengali, as well as a Bafta for his TV series The Experiments.

Last July he celebrated 20 years on Channel 4 with a two-hour special and a live stunt involving cups and nails, for which viewers at home reckoned they had cracked his method.
