During the first episode of Channel 4 show Escape to the Chateau, Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree began their search to find their forever family home. It took the couple four years and several trips to France before they fell in love with Chateau de la Motte Husson and decided to buy it within an hour of viewing it a few years ago. Before Angel had even stepped foot into the property, she told her husband that she wanted to put in an offer.
During Dick and Angel’s property search they initially thought their budget of £300,000 would buy them a small country cottage.
Little did they know that in fact, French property prices were lower so they could afford to buy something much grander.
In the end, the couple managed to buy their dream home for £250,000, which was the equivalent of €340,000 at the time. For that price, the couple got a 45-room Chateau, set over five floors.
The property also came with 20 acres of land, a walled garden and an orangery.

As Dick discussed the couple’s options, he came to the realisation that their money would go so much further in France than in the UK.
He explained: “We’re just thinking ‘Hold on for the price of a one-bedroom flat in the East End of London, we can actually have a Chateaux with 10 acres’.
“We can’t believe our luck.”
Despite some of the Chateaus in France being priced for millions, some are being sold at £150,000, although they need a lot of renovation work.
During the first series, Angel and Dick embarked on their journey to find their home and they were blown away by one particular Chateau as soon as they drove up the driveway.
“That is pretty special, isn’t it?” Angel commented.
Dick added: “It looks good, doesn’t it?”
Despite being impressed by the exterior, Dick instantly noticed the Chateau needed a lot of work doing including the plumbing and the heating whereas Angel was simply looking for a vintage-looking property.

As she was looking around, she joked: “I like old things, that’s why I’m with Dick.”
After travelling back and forth to France six times, Dick and Angel finally found their perfect home.
Before they had even viewing the Chateau, Angel said: “I think we should put an offer in now.”
“This is not too shoddy,” she added as she walked through the front door.
After less than an hour of viewing the property Angel and Dick decided to put in an offer.
“I’m trying to be sensible,” Dick said. “This is a huge house. It’s got the orangery, it’s got the walled garden and all these other things going for it.
“But, we are talking a lot of money to get it back where it should be. But it’s so beautiful, it’s almost too good.”
“She’s bought the one she wants,” he added. “We’re in trouble.”
After buying the Chateau, Dick and Angel began the planning for their renovation project.
However, the couple soon realised it was going to be much harder than they initially thought.
They had set themselves a budget of £20,000 to spend on the renovations, although the plumbing and heating alone set them back £18,000.
Escape to the Chateau is available to watch on All 4.
