Don't Freak Out, but 'The Undoing' Might Not Get a Second Season

Better hope that The Undoing finale doesn’t end in a cliffhanger, because as of right now HBO has not renewed the Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant, and Donald Sutherland series for season 2. If they don’t figure out who killed Elena soon we’ll all be in trouble. Technically, the show is a “miniseries,” which usually means there’s only one season (except in the case of Big Little Lies).

There’s still time for The Undoing Season 2 to be announced, before the final episode has aired or even after. But instead of twiddling our thumbs waiting for a response, let’s go over what we actually do know.

Why would HBO dare cancel it?

Well, the ratings have been good and people are plenty obsessed with everything from Nicole Kidman singing the opening credits song to the juicy murder mystery at the center. The only reason I can think of for canceling The Undoing is if the producers never wanted there to be a second season in the first place. This could prove to be just a miniseries, like Sharp Objects. Sometimes you have to let endings be endings.

Could it show up somewhere else?

There is always the possibility that The Undoing will show up somewhere else. The story isn’t necessarily over even if it does get the ax. HBO recently canceled The Outsider, another murder mystery with major stars at the helm that aired this fall, and that show’s producers announced their intention to “shop” The Outsiders to other networks, or streaming services, or whatever.

What would it even be about?

There is only one book The Undoing is based on, it’s not a series, so that might be one reason to not renew it for another season. They’re going to run out of source material really quick. However, that hasn’t stopped series adaptations of books like Big Little Lies, The Leftovers, and The Handmaid’s Tale before. If the people want more, the writers will find a way to bring us more!

It would actually be really cool to make The Undoing an anthology series and focus on one of the other moms at Reardon School. What skeletons hide in the closet of the characters played by Lily Rabe, Maria Dizzia, and Janel Moloney? That would be an easy way to do another season if the Hollywood heavy hitters like Kidman, Grant, and Sutherland aren’t available to make more episodes. But that’s just my two cents. HBO needs to mail me a check before they get any of more of my bright ideas about what The Undoing should do next, thank you very much!

How am I gonna get my crime fix now? Give me MORE!

If you watched The Undoing then you probably also watched Little Fires Everywhere. Doesn’t it kind of feel like the Big Little Lies ladies started a club and divvied up a stack of books for their own individual projects? Where are the chilling mystery shows starring Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley?

Kravitz had High Fidelity but that absolutely does not count… no crime whatsoever! If you’re looking for a similar vibe before a potentialThe Undoing season 2, I recommend the aforementioned Sharp Objects, the aforementioned The Outsider, as well as The Affair.
