Driven is the funny story of car manufacturer John DeLorean’s brush with drug smugglers but it rarely delivers – The Sun

THE phrase “inspired by true events” fills me with fear – and this comedy drama about car manufacturer John DeLorean’s brush with drug smugglers justifies that trepidation.

It left me mildly amused, but far from satisfied.

Jason Sudeikis is Jim Hoffman, a complete numpty who finds himself in the pocket of the FBI after being caught smuggling cocaine from Bolivia.

Unwittingly moving in next door to the famous car magnate (Lee Pace) leads him down a farcical path where he’s both starstruck by his new friend and desperate for a way out of his own predicament.

When DeLorean’s dream of filling the states full of stainless steel-clad winged cars goes awry, Hoffman attempts to frame both his friend and the notorious drug dealer who got him into the mess to begin with.

Granted, it’s a funny story.

Sudelkis carries the whole tale with his brand of pathetic/loser comedy.

It’s full of good intentions and promises, but rarely delivers on anything empathetic or truly funny.

Lee Pace’s performance as DeLorean is pretty hilarious, but for all the wrong reasons.

There’s a really good story in there, but the makers chose to focus on all the wrong parts.
