EastEnders sends fans wild with huge Neighbours announcement – but there’s a twist

EastEnders bosses shared a surprising new announcement on Saturday, as they revealed a brand new doctor would soon be heading to Walford.

With no shortage of injuries and illnesses to treat in the drama filled streets of Albert Square, it was clearly going to need the help of a seasoned doctor to take over the reins, and who better than Neighbours icon himself, Dr. Karl Kennedy (as played by Alan Fletcher.)

In a teaser video shared online, the popular doctor appeared to have swapped his sun-soaked life in Erinsborough for a stint in London, and with a twinkle in his eyes, Karl stepped off the tube and out into Albert Square.

The BBC soap teased: "We welcome a new doctor to The Square this summer. Dr Karl Kennedy will be doing a short stint in Walford's GP surgery before he heads back to Erinsborough! We. Can't. Wait.”

However, despite the exciting announcement, several eagled-eyed fans could’t help but realise the date, before sussing that the news was sadly too good to be true and part of a tongue in cheek April Fool’s Day prank.

Sharing their delight on social media, fans were quick to share their thoughts on the joke, with several even hoping that one day it could become a reality!

“Full marks for going to all that effort to film and edit a full trailer for this and drafting in Dr Kennedy for it as well!” praised one fan.

“April Fool! Although for a second I thought this was Ian Beale returning!” quipped another.

Before a third lamented: “Dammit!! I was all excited for this and then saw the date!”

While a fourth added: “I’m here as a @neighbours fan begging for this to be real one day!”

The show later shared a follow up post admitting that it had all been part of a ruse, prompting another flurry of fans to weigh in on the situation as they saw the funny side – and potential – of what could be a very interesting addition to the show.

“Tbf walford does need a new doctor,” observed one fan alongside a string of laughing emojis.

Another fan admitted they’d fallen for the joke as they added: “I was duped, gagged and slayed!”

Although today’s post was indeed a joke announcement, it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility as fans previously saw Alan appear on the soap as himself last year.

As Neighbours was due to end in July 2022, Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) was seen reminiscing about the soap as she discussed it coming to an end.

Heartbroken by the loss of one of her favourite shows, Linda could hardly believe her luck when Alan later came into the Bridge Street cafe asking for help to order a cab, with charming scenes showing the pair snapping a selfie together before Alan went on his way.

Thankfully, despite ending last year, Neighbours was later picked up by Amazon Freevee, with brand new episodes of the soap due to begin filming again on April 17th, meaning fans won’t have long to wait to see Alan reprise his role as Dr Kennedy in the coming months.
