Ed Sheeran has only just released his fourth studio album, = (Equals), but he has already begun thinking about what is coming next. In recent months the star has dropped some hints about what would be his fifth studio album, – (Subtract).
Before that, however, Sheeran has revealed: “I’m going to make ten symbol records, but the next five won’t be maths.” (Via The Armchair Expert Podcast)
The star seemingly likes to keep things simple, so what will the next collection of albums be based on?
Of course, there’s the off chance he takes on literary symbols. Could they be titled Full Stop? Question Mark? Semi-Colon? At this point, anything is possible.
Sheeran also explained how he was planning a more stripped-down record for Subtract.
Sheeran said: “My idea for Subtract was to not have anything on it, just be an acoustic record.” (Via EW)
Subtract would be his final Mathematics album, following Plus, Multiply, Divide, and the recently released Equals.
Unless Sheeran decides to delve into formulae, Subtract would be the album that closes out the Mathematics collection of albums, and to do so with an acoustic record is quite a bold decision.
Before that, however, he has already promised a new collaborations album.
Ed Sheeran: School teacher discusses project with singer
Sheeran told the podcast he’ll be releasing “No. 7” in the near future.
No.7 will follow No.6 Collaborations Project which he released in 2019.
Although not a “mainline” record, it did get certified gold and debuted at number one in both the UK and US album charts.
And, with its star-studded track line-up, it’s not hard to see why.
Sheeran collaborated with a collection of music industry giants on No.6, including Justin Bieber, Khalid, Chance the Rapper, Skrillex, Stormzy, etc.
And he hasn’t missed a beat just yet, as his latest album has done equally as well in the charts.
Equals debuted at the top of the album charts in both Australia and Lithuania.
Two of the star’s singles have also done extremely well in the charts.
Both Shivers and Bad Habits topped the charts in both the UK and the US when they hit streaming services.
The latter song’s music video showed Sheeran as his fans had never seen him before: As a blood-sucking vampire.
