It’s estimated that 70 percent of adults in Spain play El Gordo each year – considerably more than play lotteries in any other European countries. And it’s no wonder, considering so many cash prizes are on offer. Taking place on Wednesday, December 22, how can you play El Gordo from home?
What is El Gordo?
Playing El Gordo is considerably more long-winded and complicated than playing the National Lottery.
To start, you don’t pick your own numbers. For El Gordo you buy a pre-printed ticket with your number.
There are 100,000 different numbers in the Spanish Christmas lottery.
These 100,000 numbers range from 00000 to 99999 and are on the lottery balls which tumble around inside a giant rotating drum on the day of the El Gordo lottery draw.
Depending on which numbers come out, you can win any prize ranging from four million euros to a few thousand.
But there is billions on offer – meaning there’s a reasonable chance you could take some cash home.
The prize ticket numbers are sung out by pupils of Madrid’s San Ildefonso School in a nationally televised event from the city’s Teatro Real opera house.
How do I enter El Gordo?
To enter El Gordo from the UK, you will need to register for an account on elgordo.com.
This will generate tickets for you, and you can choose how many you want to buy.
All you have to do then is simply wait for the draw to take place on December 22.
