Hit 1990s primetime show Gladiators is set to make a major comeback more than 22 years after the series ended.

The Saturday night BBC One show saw super-fit members of the public put their bodies to the test when they went up against a team of gladiators each week.

Jet aka Diane Youdale and Wolf also known as impressive bodybuilder Michael Van Wijk shot to stardom during the TV series and regularly poured in millions of viewers each week.

Now, as the show approaches its 30th anniversary on the silver screen, BBC bosses have announced they are lining up a reboot of the show with filming expected to start next year.

According to Broadcast, filming for the BBC classic will take place in Sheffield Arena in collaboration with Hungry Bear Media – the production company founded by Holly Willoughby's husband Dan Baldwin.

Galdiators – which was originally made for ITV network London Weekend Television – was proudly presented by Ulrika Jonsson and famous footballer John Fashanu.

Loyal fans of the show will remember the famous cast of characters on the show included gruff referee John 'you will go on my first whistle' Anderson and voiceover legend John Sachs.

It saw competitors take on the cast in Atlas Spheres, The Wall, Danger Zone, Swingshot, Hang Tough and Duel – where the stars battled with giant foam cotton buds.

The 1990s TV show came to an end after eight years back in 2000, with Sky One attempting to briefly revive the show between 2008 and 2009.

The celebratory announcement has since sparked a wave of support from nostalgic fans on social media who were overjoyed to hear of its return.

One user penned: "Yes! Original Gladiators was must-watch TV on Saturdays when I was a kid with rolls from a Safeway bakery savoury wheel and bits for dinner."

Another argued: "Gladiators can't be rebooted because no one on earth has the raw sexual charisma that Wolf had."
