Have you been using shampoo all wrong? YouTube’s most popular hair stylist says you could be damaging your hair

Do you ever really think about the way you apply shampoo? It’s one of those things that we’ve all been doing for such a long time that we barely pay a second thought to whether our lathering technique could need adjusting.

But Brad Mondo, YouTube’s most popular hair stylist, is out to prove that the way you apply your shampoo is important to the health of your hair.

Speaking to his near seven million YouTube followers, he explains in the video that most people make the mistake of scrubbing their scalps way too hard when they lather up their shampoo.

“A lot of people like to go really in and scrub,” he says. “I know it feels good but what you’re doing is tangling and matting your hair.”

“You don’t need to do that because you’ll rough up the cuticle too much, and when you rough up the cuticle you could be losing hair that you don’t need to be losing.”

The New York-based stylist then goes on to explain that you should be massaging it in “extremely gently, like you’re touching a baby’s head”.

He also warns girls with long fingernails that they could also be scratching their scalp and causing hair damage.

If you’re not sure how much shampoo you should be using either, Brad says you don’t need to apply more than a two-pence coin amount, regardless of your hair length. The logic is you only need to work it onto the scalp and not all through the ends.

Want to make sure your scalp, roots and lengths are all in tip top condition? We suggest combining a more delicate approach to lathering shampoo using the scalp-friendly duo of Maui Moisture Revive & Hydrate + Shea Butter Shampoo & Conditioner.

These products are free from SLS, an ingredient that can actually cause scalp irritation for some people. SLS is a strong detergent added to your shampoo to create that “lathery” effect, but if you have a sensitive scalp you might find that you’d benefit from using products without it.

Maui’s vegan-friendly formula contains aloe vera, coconut water and shea butter to hydrate, nourish and repair over-styled and dry lengths – be that as a result of heat styling or years of vigorous shampooing.
