'Jeopardy!' Fans Furiously Call For Tabloids to Leave Alex Trebek Alone
To look at Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek, it’s difficult to tell he has been through the worst health battle of his life in the last year. Divulging his stage four pancreatic cancer diagnosis in 2019, the game show host has been nothing but courageous, working through the pain, the treatments, and the indignities of the disease.
Unfortunately, Trebek’s illness hasn’t slowed down tabloids from reporting on his most difficult moments and fans of the classic question-and-answer program are not having it.

Alex Trebek announced his illness in 2019
His diagnosis in 2019 of stage 4 pancreatic cancer shocked Alex Trebek’s millions of fans. As he noted in his announcement, the disease at that point of its progression has a very low survival rate. But it seems that his 36-year run on the game show, as well of course, as his family and friends, has given him a sense of purpose in moving forward.

“I wanted to be the one to pass along this information,” Trebek said in his filmed announcement. “Just like 50,000 other people in the United States each year, this week I was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Now normally, the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I’m going to fight this, and I’m going to keep working.”
Even during what had to have been a grueling statement to make, the 79-year-old host did his best to keep it light.
“I plan to beat the low survival-rate statistics for this disease,” he said. “Truth told, I have to! Because under the terms of my contract, I have to host Jeopardy! for three more years!”
The recent invasion of Trebek’s privacy
In a May 2020 article, British tabloid The Daily Mail referred to Trebek as “frail” and “unrecognizable,” along with photos of the game show host as he took bags of trash to the curb outside his Los Angeles home.

The Canadian-born Trebek is seen in the photos as anyone might look in the comfort of their home: attired in blue jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers. The only glaring difference, of course, was that Trebek, who announced in March 2020 that he was observing his first-year cancer survival milestone, has lost all his hair due, it’s assumed, to chemotherapy.
It left the six-time Daytime Emmy winner’s fans shocked at the outlet’s lack of propriety.
Trebek’s fans respond with outrage on social media
Fans were understandably upset at the article and coverage of the beloved television personality.
Tweets came fast and furious, including “Paps clicking away while #AlexTrebek takes out the trash; talking s*** about how he looks, etc. STFU. It’s probably a miracle he is walking unassisted. The man is 80; has one of the worst types of cancer. . .”
And on cancer survivor website, SurvivorNet, members were offended at The Daily Mail‘s coverage.
“It is a horrible disease,” said one person. “I am totally disgusted at the photographer and whoever wrote and published this article. Where is your compassion? Alex is a decent man that does not need this. I understand what his wife and family are living with and fighting. I am heartbroken for them. To the person that took this photo, please grow a heart.”
And another person said, “[Alex] looks amazingly healthy for someone who’s had pancreatic cancer. My husband had pancreatic cancer and he only lasted for 4 months and he was much younger than Alex. He hardly had the strength to get out of bed, never mind take out the trash.”
“A family member passed away from that same cancer a few months ago, less than a year after diagnosis,” a fan of Trebek’s said. “Alex actually looks good. Wish they would find a cure, since it’s a terrible disease.”
