Jessica Plummer says her "heart is bleeding" after watching her character Chantelle Atkins being killed in EastEnders.

The singer and actress, who turned 28 this week, has been part of a heart-stopping storyline surrounding domestic abuse, which came to a head during Friday's episode.

Chantelle was killed by her husband Gray Atkins, played by Toby-Alexander Smith, after he discovered she was trying to leave him, plotting a new life for her and their two children.

Former Neon Jungle singer Jessica took to Instagram after the unsettling episode aired, writing to her 119,000 followers: "My heart is bleeding for Chantelle, and it bleeds for the woman that is killed every 4 days at the hands of a current or ex partner.

"So much research went into this story line, and I am so thankful to Women's Aid and Refuge for their support and the lifesaving work that they do.

"I hope off the back of our collaborative work, people will speak out when maybe otherwise would have stayed silent. Or a friend or family member will check in with someone they might be worried about.

"What Chantelle went through is happening day in day out and as we've seen, can go unnoticed."

The stunner went on to share details of how you can help somebody you know or suspect is in a similar position to Chantelle.

She continued: "If you or someone you know needs help please find a safe space if you're able to and call the National Domestic Abuse helpline 0808 2000 247 or if you can't speak on the phone visit www.womensaid.org.uk or www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk for other ways to get in contact."

Alongside her heartfelt statement, she posted a photo of herself in character, raising a hand to the camera with #SpEEkout and #EastEnders written on it.

OK! championed the work of Refuge earlier this year with the Closet Clear Out campaign, urging our readers to donate their clothes and money to the charity.

Closet Clear Out earned the backing of a whole host of celebrities, including the Home Secretary Priti Patel.

She said: "I commend OK! for helping to give this issue the national prominence it deserves.

"This campaign will send a strong message that we all see domestic abuse for the despicable crime that it is – letting survivors, victims and perpetrators know that we will not tolerate it in any form."
