John Lewis 2021 advert sees alien experience Christmas novelties for the first time

John Lewis has unveiled its much-anticipated Christmas advert to highlight the joy of reuniting with loved ones after the pandemic.

Titled 'Unexpected Guest', the festive campaign sees an alien named Skye crash-land onto earth and into the woods at the height of the Christmas period before she is greeted by a 14 year old boy named Nathan.

The two-minute ad, which will be released on social media at 8am and premiere on TV during the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards at 8.15pm, reminds viewers of experiencing Christmas for the first time after 2020 saw families isolated with lockdown restrictions.

In heartwarming scenes, Skye is introduced by Nathan to the novelties of Christmas including eating mince pies, decorating the tree with baubles and lights before she is somewhat confused by the concept of wearing garish festive jumpers.

The soundtrack is a cover of Together in Electric Dreams by 20 year old singer-songwriter Lola Young, from London, which was first released by Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder in 1984.

Lola has garnered 31,300 Instagram followers and has appeared on Later…with Jools Holland and was recently named as a breakthrough artist for Amazon Music UK.

Claire Pointon, customer director for John Lewis, said: “There is nothing more magical than discovering the joy of Christmas for the first time and enjoying your favourite festive moments with loved ones.

"After the last 18 months, we wanted our advert to really celebrate this as we look forward to a brighter future.

"We know our customers are excited for this festive season more than ever, as they reconnect with family and friends. Through the story of Skye and Nathan we celebrate friendship and are reminded of the joy of experiencing Christmas for the first time."

Meanwhile every product featured in the advert is available to purchase from John Lewis with customers able to 'shop key scenes' including the Christmas tree decorations and dinner table setting.

Shoppers will also be able to buy the jumper that Nathan gifts to Skye, with prices starting at £14, with 10 per cent of profits going to charities FareShare and Home-Start UK.

It comes after Disney released its magical and tear-jerking 2021 advert which is titled The Stepdad and sees a blended family spend their first Christmas together.

The three-minute campaign, which is in support of the Make-A-Wish foundation, sees a single mum along with her son Max and daughter welcome a father figure into their home.

With the message, 'From Our Family To Yours', Disney have pulled on the heartstrings of viewers with the stepfather trying to navigate his role in the family by building snowmen, constructing gingerbread houses and reading a book that was a gift from Max's birth father.
