Kate Garraway’s highly-anticipated and emotional Finding Derek documentary aired last night on ITV and it truly was a tear-jerker. The program saw the journalist give a raw and intimate account of the impact COVID-19 has had on her husband Derek Draper and how the illness has affected her family since his admission to hospital back in March 2020. But among the glowing reviews and admiration for Kate, one social media user branded the documentary “shameful”.

Absolutely shameful that kate would film this

Replying to Kate’s Good Morning Britain co-host Ben Shepherd, who was among those sharing his respect for his close friend, they slammed the mother-of-two for filming the behind-the-scenes show.

They wrote beneath: “Absolutely shameful that Kate would film this!

“It’s more Kate The journalist rather than Kate Garraway the wife!” they snapped.

In no time at all other viewers rushed to defend the GMB presenter, with one writing: “If you can be anything #BeKind I hope Derek’s children can’t read your silly negativity.”

Choosing not to reply directly, it became clear Kate had seen the original nasty remark, as she liked the latter response.

More fans flooded the comments section, urging the user to “walk a mile in Kate’s shoes” before judging.

“So sad that you feel compelled to post this. Feel really sorry for you. You must be really miserable. I hope life gets better for you so you don’t have to troll others,” one retorted.

Another added: “I’m sorry you feel this way, she was doing it to show what people not just herself are going through. As @benshephard said she has a voice which others don’t. Instead of being rude how about learn and be understanding.”

“Kate and her children have shown tonight the hell they are dealing with, have been and will continue to deal with but you get a ‘feeling’ and felt the need to tell one of her closest friends/work colleagues that she did this for her journalism career, shame on you,” a third commented.

A fourth replied: “Really? What a shame you have to spout negativity after this programme has given some people such positivity. She has given us all an insight into how seriously ill people can get from this horrendous virus!”

Someone else disagreed entirely with their views, explaining: “I felt we saw Kate the wife, Kate the Mum, Kate trying to be a voice for those that have gone unheard. Kate came across as strong and trying to hold things together and to get her husband home at any cost… A bit of kindness is needed, walk a mile in her shoes before judging.”

Meanwhile, there were others who admitted the user is allowed to have a different opinion, however unpopular, writing: “He’s entitled to his opinion. I’m uneasy with this documentary too.”

The original Twitter troll then responded: “All I can say is, I just welcome a balanced opinion to initial reaction to the show.”

Despite the odd comment, the documentary appeared to be very well received with thousands across the nation detailing their admiration for the telly star and how she’s dealt with the aftermath of Derek’s absence whilst still being there for their children Darcey and Bill.

But viewers could tell how exhausted and overwhelmed she is, as she opened up on her concerns about how Derek’s lengthy battle with long Covid will impact his brain; something that has been “scaring her more and more” recently.

During Finding Derek, she was seen on the phone telling medics: “You wanted to go through with me some of the potential cognitive changes for Derek and how that will impact going forward.”

In the program, which was filmed over the last year, she says that while “I don’t think I ever really saw it (the situation) as giving up work,” that may be a possibility she has to face.

Kate then divulged: “The effects of Covid on Derek’s brain are scaring me more and more.

“I’m in constant contact with Derek’s doctors trying to understand their observations.”

One of his medical team was then heard detailing the “significant damage” he had suffered as a result of COVID-19.

The doctor said: “I think Derek has very significant damage. There’s a lot to take in. I think also emotionally, there’s a lot to take in.”
