Love Island’s Antigoni opens up about bond with Jacques O’Neill, who ‘she loves’

Former Love Island star Antigoni Buxton has opened up to showbiz reporter Carly Hacon about her friendship with Jacques.

During a Facebook Live interview, the singer shared an update on Jacques’ wellbeing after his sudden exit from the show due to his mental health.

Antigoni revealed: “He’s in a really good place. He’s happy, he and his mum are super close, there’s a support system there. He’s in good spirits. He did the right thing, leaving, and that shows a level of emotional maturity to say: ‘Right, I’m going to lose myself if I stay here’. He’s all good!”

The duo have confirmed that they had a friendship whilst in the villa, but Love Island producers rarely showed clips of them together.

“With Jacques, you could see a little bit [of our friendship]. There were a couple of situations where I was giving him advice, there was one point when he was being stroppy and I pulled him [for a chat].”

She admitted that they turned to each other for “guidance” when they felt “lost” and that she “tagged along with Jacques and Paige a lot”, but audiences didn’t get to see “the bigger picture”.

“I spent a lot of time with the guys, training, making food, it just wasn’t shown. There were some flirty conversations, gym sessions, all of that kind of stuff. Ultimately, maybe they didn’t show it because [the spark] wasn’t there.”

Upon Jacques and Antigoni’s exits from the island, rumours began to fly that the pair were hitting it off and fans were eager for the duo to become an item.

When asked about the rumours, Antigoni said: ”Genuinely, he’s a really lovely boy and we’re both just really there for each other. Honestly, I’ve got a great friend in Jacques. People have this thing where, as soon as a boy and a girl are together, people think: ‘There must be something more!’ No, no, we really are just friends.

“I love him to bits, he’s a sweetheart.”

In an Instagram post, the former islander joked that she and Jacques “looked like siblings”, which she confirmed was a move to “make it more clear” that there is no romantic side to their relationship.

“People are going hard and making edits like: ‘These two need to go back in as a couple!’ First of all, Paige is my girl. I know she’s happy with Adam now, but I still wouldn’t do that. We’re literally just friends.”
