Escaped convict David Kessler (played by Frank Military) is the prime suspect in the NCIS team’s latest case in the next episode of NCIS: Los Angeles. Unfortunately, a certain CIA agent thinks she has a better grasp on the investigation when the CBS drama returns this weekend.

Agents G Callen (Chris O’Donnell) and Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) are in for a nasty surprise in the next episode of NCIS: Los Angeles.

The popular spin-off continues this Sunday with ‘Through the Looking Glass’ and sees the team face off against David Kessler for the first time since his release at the start of season 12.

After receiving a threatening letter from the dangerous sociopath, Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) is convinced Kessler is coming after her.

Meanwhile, Callen and Hanna are hunting a killer who has started torturing and murdering Naval officers.

However, their search reaches a roadblock when they discover one of the bodies has been removed from the crime scene by the CIA.

The latest promo for the new episode reveals that returning agent Joelle Taylor (Elizabeth Bogush) will be overseeing the investigation.

She confirms: “With the approval of SecNav and the director of Central Intelligence, I’ll be a liaison, coordinating and overseeing NCIS’s investigation.”

When Callen asks if she’s in charge, she adds: “Think of it as a partnership, where I have oversight of everything.”

Fans of the series who remember her last appearances are now concerned the CIA operative will prolong the NCIS’s search into the latest string of brutal murders.

If the deaths are indeed connected to Kessler’s return, Joelle’s interference could have fatal consequences for Kensi Blye.

Once the new clip was posted on YouTube, one bemused fan questioned Joelle’s integrity to lead such a sensitive investigation.

They commented: “Really Joelle leading the team? Joelle’s last mission, the one with Katya, got two agents killed and her kidnapped, not to mention she’s still recovering from her injuries due to her kidnapping.”

Joelle was first introduced as a potential love interest to Callen back in season six.

They soon split up when Callen’s numerous secrets stood in the way of their relationship, but they remained on relatively good terms.

However, their trust was thrown into question when Joelle was revealed as a CIA agent who had been tasked to observe Callen and report back to HQ.

Her involvement with the NCIS team took a dangerous turn when she was kidnapped by rogue CIA agents known as the Syndicate.

Plus, as this fan pointed out, her run-in with the Russian agent Katya (Eve Harlow) resulted in some serious collateral damage.

Another NCIS promo has other fans thinking Kensi could come out on top thanks to a split-second shot of the agent readying a sniper rifle.

Even so, the current instalment is now approaching its final episodes and, with Kessler on the loose, fans can only hope that the agent somehow makes it out alive.

NCIS: Los Angeles season 12 continues Sunday, May 16 on CBS.
