The 13th season of NCIS: Los Angeles is now in full swing with the likes of Kilbride (played by Gerard McRaney), Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) and Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) facing a fresh batch of challenges. But one storyline continuing to dominate the show is the future of long-serving boss Hetty Lange (Linda Hunt) who went AWOL once more in the season 13 premiere on yet another top-secret assignment.

The details of Hetty’s latest expedition remains shrouded in as much secrecy as her season 12 absence, although fans should get answers soon enough.

A few clues from the NCIS LA season 13 premiere suggest Hetty had headed to the middle-east after scouring a map of the Syrian Desert.

But this mission is different to the last as the new man at the helm, Kilbride admitted he’d have no problem “disavowing” Hetty if any problems were to arise from her situation.

So with so many unanswered questions, Express.co.uk spoke to one former star who played a major foe of Hetty’s from season five to see if they had any answers.

Back in the fifth run, a leak from the team led Hetty to track down and put disgraced former agent Paul Angelo (Daniel Henney) under the microscope.

Hetty clearly had a lot of disdain for Angelo for his ties to criminal Tyler Brunson (Stephen Wozniak) and wanted to interrogate him solo.

Their rivalry came and went in the season five episode titled Three Hearts but Angelo is still alive and well in the NCIS: LA universe.

So when asked if he’d be open to a possible return to the fray as the disgraced agent, actor Henney didn’t rule it out.

Speaking exclusively on the red carpet ahead of The Wheel of Time premiere, Henney said when asked about a comeback: “I don’t know, if they had me back I would.

“That was because I was a friend with one of the writers and that was sort of a favour that I did.

“I would go back to Criminal Minds for like an appearance because I love that show so much.

“NCIS LA… I think everyone’s sort of scattered so if they wanted me back I might consider it, I’ll have to see what the story is.”

So while Henney may not have confirmed a return for season 13, the door certainly seems open for him to make a comeback.

And what more ideal of a storyline could there be than to wreak havoc on Hetty as she continues to work mysteriously away from the team?

For now though, fans will have to wait and see as Angelo’s return hasn’t been confirmed – although they can catch actor Henney in Amazon Prime’s new fantasy series The Wheel of Time.

Alongside Rosamund Pike, Henney takes on the role of Lan Mondrago to bring Robert Jordan’s famous fantasy novels to life on-screen.

Discussing the differences of the new Amazon drama with crime procedurals like Criminal Minds and NCIS LA, Henney added: “It’s so, so different.

“Criminal Minds in terms of like the family aspect of it that I had with the stars and the cast and crew, (that’s) the same. But this show – it just really challenges you.

“I think there were moments for all of us where we just had to come together and be like, ‘We’ve gotta get through it’. The scenes are big, (with) a lot of physical demands.

“Working with Rosamund [Pike] has been a dream come true, she’s so talented but also makes you bring your game every single day, she’s not gonna let you slip up – she’s the real deal.”

NCIS: Los Angeles season 13 airs Sundays on CBS in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
