Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger has been backed by fans after appearing to criticise One Direction 's Liam Payne for claiming the boy band had been formed around him.

The 44-year-old shared her latest Instagram video yesterday (Wednesday), playing the group's Night Changes hit as she prepared to go out.

Her caption read: "Does it ever drive you crazy just how… long it takes for the truth to come out?"

It came after Liam claimed the group, which was formed in 2010 on The X Factor, had been based around him before Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik were also chosen.

Each of the five members auditioned and competed as a solo performer, but early in the season they were advised to pool their talents.

Just weeks after he made the comments, an unaired clip from the ITV show revealed that Liam was actually the fourth boy added to the line-up.

The clip also showed the role Nicole played in putting the group together.

One of her fans said said: "The real creator of 1D. Only a powerful girl that was in a band knows how to create another amazing band."

Another commented: "You created the best band in the whole world!", while a further follower said: "We knew! We all knew."

Nicole, Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh chose which boys should be grouped together after they had auditioned as solo performers.

Liam said on the US personality Logan Paul's podcast: "From what I've heard, part of the reason One Direction was made was because of Simon's promise to me that, 'In two years, I'll make this work for you.'

"'So he started with my face, and then worked around the rest… I was the honorary member of One Direction. He told me that story himself at his house.'"

The new X Factor clip revealed that Niall was actually the first boy pulled chosen to form the band, followed by Harry, then Louis, then Liam and Zayn.

Nicole said of the group: "They're just too talented to get rid of. And they've got just the right look and the right charisma on stage. They're like little stars, so you can't get rid of little stars – you put them all together."

One Direction appeared on the seventh season of The X Factor, which aired on ITV at the end of 2010.

Matt Cardle won the competition but One Direction went on to become one of the most successful acts to come out of the former ITV programme.
