Normal People's Connell and Marianne 40 years on are exactly how you'd expect

Normal People has spectacularly returned, in the form of two specials for Irish Comic Relief.

But in the second sketch, Connell and Marianne aren’t quite as you remember them.

Titled Normal Older People, the clip showed the lovelorn tenagers 40 years in the future.

In it, Connell, played by Moone Boy’s Peter McDonald, is seen making Marianne (played by Comic Relief host and comedian Deirdre O’Kane) beans on toast late one evening.

This leads us to believe grown-up Connell and Mari are still very much together, even if it basically a spoof. Hurray.

However, the kind beans on toast gesture goes somewhat awry, as it leads to a characteristically intense, intense discussion about… well, we’re not exactly sure.

But they’re still stumbling over the words and finding it impossible to make sense of each other.

Tongue in cheek it may be, but it’s strangely comforting to see it!

Earlier in the evening, Irish Comic Relief aired another special featuring Marianne and Connell – played the show’s original actors Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal – seeking spiritual advice from a priest.

Not just any priest, though, but the Hot Priest from Fleabag, in one of the greatest cameos in the history of TV (probably).

Normal People, based on the novel of the same name by Sally Rooney, dropped on BBC3 earlier this year.

It promptly became one the channel’s most-watched show ever.
