Otis Reading III dead: Son of legendary singer dies age 59 after cancer battle
Otis Reading III has died following his cancer battle.
Otis was the son of the late, great Otis Ray Redding Jr. who was best known for tracks such as The Dock of the Bay, My Girl and I've Been Loving You Too Long.
Otis III followed in his famous father's footsteps and also pursued a career in music.
He was only three years old when Otis Jr tragically died in a plane crash in 1967 with the rest of his band.
Confirming the news of Otis III's death, his devastated sister Karla Redding-Andrew wrote on Facebook: “It is with heavy hearts that the family of Otis Redding III confirms that he lost his battle with cancer last evening."
Otis is survived by his siblings Karla, Demetria and Dexter.
With his brother Dexter and their cousin Mark Lockett, he created the band The Reddings and the trio recorded six albums in the 1980s.
Otis III played guitar, while Dexter played bass and did vocals. Mark played the keyboard.
The band went on to be reasonably successful with their track Remote Control making it to number 6 in the Hot Soul Singles chart in the '80s.
It wasn't until he was hired by soul singer Eddie Floyd for one of his tours that Otis himself started singing.
The late musician recalled in a 2018 interview with WCSH of Portland, Maine, as per NBC: "[Eddie] said, 'You can play guitar with me, but you’re going to have to sing a few of your dad’s songs.'
"I was like, ‘Huh? I don’t sing,’ you know. And he was like, ‘Well, you’re going to sing Dock of the Bay with me tonight.’"
Music fans have since taken to Twitter to share their sadness at the news of Otis' passing.
"They always take the good ones first. Mr Redding, you will be missed," said one.
"We have all lost a musical legend," someone else mourned.
A third went on: "Otis is now back with his father. And boy oh boy do they have a lot to talk about. RIP man."
