Outlander explained: Why does Malva Christie try to kill Claire Fraser?

Outlander cast tease details of ‘exciting’ season six

Season six of Outlander has been slightly delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic but is in the works with the scripts written and the cast and crew ready to go. The show will be taking its cue from the sixth Outlander novel by Diana Gabaldon – A Breath of Snow and Ashes. As there’s no release date for the new series, some fans have been turning their attention to the novel for clues about what’s to come.

Why does Malva Christie try to kill Claire Fraser in Outlander?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from the Outlander novels and possible future spoilers

A Breath of Snow and Ashes will see the arrival of young woman Malva Christie, who serves as an apprentice to Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe).

Malva is initially a promising student and Claire almost sees the young girl as a daughter of sorts.

However, she spells trouble for the Frasers as time goes on when a strain of dysentery sweeps the estate and claims the lives of many.

Claire falls ill and is left in a bad way with Malva left to tend to the patients as she recovers.

Claire nearly dies from her illness but just about manages to survive it but is left in a weakened state.

As time goes on though, Claire starts to become suspicious about her affliction, believing it isn’t the same illness which has left many others dead.

Despite being ill, Claire rises from her sickbed to investigate the matter further and realises something isn’t right.

To make matters worse, Malva then claims she is pregnant and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) is the father of the child.

Claire is left incensed by the accusation and later learns Malva slept with several men, who may be the actual father rather than Jamie.

Before the matter can go any further, Malva winds up dead with someone murdering the young woman and the whole sordid chapter at Fraser’s Ridge coming to end.

Malva was trying to bump off Claire in the hopes Jamie would take pity on the unwed mother and perhaps take her in.

There’s also a sense Malva was jealous of Claire and may have wanted her out of the picture to improve her own prospects.

Just how the story will play out on screen remains to be seen but Outlander star Heughan has already confirmed Malva will have a role to play in the new series.

In a video from Christmas on the official Outlander Instagram account, Heughan teased details from season six, saying: “Obviously, we have to dress a lot of people because there are many, many more settlers coming to Fraser’s Ridge.”

He continued: “There’s a new character but he’s not so new to Jamie. Actually, in Ardsmuir, Tom Christie is one of Jamie’s ancient foes.

“He comes to Fraser’s Ridge and tries to take a bit of power actually. So there’s a bit of a power play and his daughter becomes a very, very special part of this story. I can’t give away more.”

While Balfe said: “We are so excited to bring you season six. There’s lot of exciting stuff going to happen.”

She added: “It’s going to be a really exciting season where things are coming to the Ridge that will challenge even Claire Fraser’s medical knowledge.”

The actress’ words hint Malva is going to be trying to kill Claire in the show and the 20th time traveller will be left confounded by her sickness before finding out the truth.

The Christies look likely to be big antagonists for Jamie and Claire in season six, along with the fallout of Lionel Brown’s (Ned Dennehy) causing problems from the previous outing.
