Outlander fans have been trying to work out how Jamie Fraser’s (played by Sam Heughan) ghost was watching Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) at her hotel window in Inverness before she travelled back in time. Creator Diana Gabaldon has confirmed the mystery figure is Jamie and he is around 25 years old, which has left many viewers scratching their heads. They know Jamie is not 50 so aren’t sure why his ghost could be so young. Ahead of the Starz series returning, fans have looked back at previous series to speculate how and why Jamie travels through time to watch over Claire.

Many have suggested Jamie has supernatural abilities or is even able to time travel but isn’t aware of his abilities.

One fan believes Jamie does have powers but they are buried deep and will only kick into action when he dies.

They have suggested the highlander could die first leaving Claire behind but will promise to return and look after her.

Redditor Raemund explained: “I’ve long thought that Jamie’s powers strengthen in death and that the ghost in book 1 is Jamie visiting Claire as he waits for her in limbo/purgatory.

“Jamie dies first and keeps his promise that he’ll find Claire in death, and as he waits he takes advantage of opportunities to see her on the holidays when the spirit and real world are open to each other, like Samhain.

“If DG says that the series ends in Scotland, then I’m guessing Jamie dies in Scotland, and so his ghost can only roam there, so we don’t see his ghost visiting her in Boston, etc.

“Claire would only be in Scotland on these kinds of holidays at the beginning of book 1 and maybe once or twice more while she’s with Jamie in the 1740’s before/after Paris, so this time we see him visiting her is kind of his only opportunity.

“Maybe every year he visits her until she dies and joins him.”

Fans know Scotland is where Claire was on holiday when she travelled back in time and met Jamie so it would make sense if this was the only place his ghost could visit her.

It’s also worth noting it was Samhain when Jamie’s ghost appeared to watch over Claire.

Furthermore, if Jamie does return to Scotland and die there, it’s unlikely Claire would return to America as she would want to be close to her husband.

Many fans were quick to comment on the theory, with one replying: “I don’t believe that Jamie is a time traveler, but I do believe he has a gift.

“I think it’s Diana’s way of compensating for Jamie to have a “sense”. I also think that, perhaps in Book 10 when everything comes together, that Jamie’s gift will coincide with the time travel aspect. Either way, I’ll enjoy it!”

Unfortunately for fans it’s unlikely they will find out the truth about Jamie’s ghost in season six as Diana has told fans they will not find out until the final Outlander book.

Outlander season six is currently in production with fans being given their first-look at the new series in a behind-the-scenes clip last week.

Jamie star Sam asked: “What are you most excited about this season?” with Caitriona replying: “It’s lots of new things.”

Brianna Fraser actress Sophie Skelton teased: “Got a lot of new faces, new families.”

Caitriona added: “The fisherfolk, the Christie family,” as Sam revealed: “The Christie family are kind of a blast from Jamie’s past as well.”

Richard Rankin, who plays Roger MacKenzie, continued: “Lots of new characters, lots of new relationships. Lots of potential drama.”

Caitriona concluded: “Everyone’s starting to find their feet and some are still struggling.”

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Starz and Amazon Prime Video
