Sir Paul McCartney is waging war – on the humble passport photo. 

Talking to Beatles fans on Friday night about this never-before-seen snap, Macca, 79, revealed: ‘In those days you were allowed to look groovy in passport photos. 

‘But now you’ve got to look into the camera and not smile – because it’s a totalitarian state!’ 

Macca showed the photo, taken in the late 1950s, on a big screen during a talk at London’s Royal Festival Hall about his new book, The Lyrics.

He also joked: ‘John and I went to grammar schools… 

‘Ringo unfortunately didn’t but only because he was seriously ill when he was a kid. 

‘His mother was told he wouldn’t live – but Ringo will outlive us all!’

Has playing buttoned-up Prince Philip in The Crown pushed Matt Smith towards racier roles? 

Matt, 39, now wants to play the lead in a risque thriller and admits he had a teenage crush on Demi Moore following her role in the 1993 movie Indecent Proposal. 

He says: ‘I would love to do an erotic thriller like that – I’m well into those movies!’
