Fans of the USA Network’s hit series Queen of the South were conflicted today as a brand new extended trailer revealed a new look and a premiere date for season five. Unfortunately, series lead Alice Braga took to Instagram to break the news that the series will sadly be coming to an end this year.

Alice Braga caused a stir on social media on Monday with an extended look at Queen of the South’s upcoming fifth season.

Exciting new footage has revealed the culmination of her powerful drug lord Teresa Mendoza’s rise and fall in New Orleans.

The USA Network have also finally confirmed when the series will be released, starting with its season premiere on Wednesday, April 7.

Meanwhile, international fans were recently given an optimistic update as script supervisor Barry Caldwell confirmed hopeful plans to bring the series to Netflix sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately, the latest updates were marred by the news that the series will come to a definitive end when season five concludes over the summer.

On Instagram, Alice Braga wrote: “The final chapter of this special and amazing journey is coming soon.”

Showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez also confirmed the news on Twitter, thanking the show’s fans for sticking with Queen of the South since the beginning.

She said: “The news is out! This is our final season! We wouldn’t have made it this far without our loyal and passionate fans!”

“We are proud of this season and can’t wait to share it with all of you!”

The news naturally sparked disappointment from longtime viewers, who were hoping the series would continue well into the future after being hit with coronavirus delays last year.

On Alice Braga’s Instagram post, one fan replied: “Final!!! What??? Hell no!!!

“Who do I need to write or petition too for us to keep this show on?? Please…por favor!!! Tell me.”

While another said on Twitter: “This is definitely a series that could have continued for seven seasons.

“I hope the cast and crew have many other projects on the horizon! The fans love you all!”

Thankfully, it appears the series will be ending on its own terms, as Rodriguez had previously promised season five will bring Teresa closer to her alter-ego, the woman in white.

As the series also began with a foreboding flash-forward of Teresa getting shot and potentially killed, fans could expect to see the queen’s reign come to a bloody end in the coming weeks.

Production will also continue alongside the final season’s broadcast, meaning the cast and crew have plenty of time to bring Queen of the South to a satisfying conclusion.

Alongside Alice Braga, series regulars Hemky Madera and Molly Burnett will also be returning, as well as Peter Gadiot as James Valdez, who made a surprising comeback in season four.

Meanwhile, the series lead will next be seen in a supporting role in James Gunn’s upcoming DC sequel The Suicide Squad, also scheduled for release later this year.

Queen of the South season 5 begins Wednesday, April 7 on the USA Network. Seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Netflix.
