New Queen of the South showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez brought back fan-favourite James Valdez (played by Peter Gadiot) in a jaw-dropping twist for the season four finale. While the cliffhanger left fans of the series wondering if Teresa Mendoza’s (Alice Braga) ex-boyfriend will be returning as part of the main cast when the USA Network series resumes this summer, some recent Instagram snaps hold the answer.

Viewers were bowled over by the latest instalment of Queen of the South, which saw queenpin Teresa Mendoza shift her drug-running operations to New Orleans.

After spreading her product to the streets of the Big Easy, Teresa faced off against a frightening new rival, Judge Lafayette (David Andrews).

In the run-up to the season finale, fans were already grief-stricken by the loss of Teresa’s godson, Tony Parra (Julian Silva).

Emotionally rocked by Tony’s death, fans barely had time to brace themselves for yet another game-changing reveal in the season finale; the return of James Valdez (Peter Gadiot).

James’ comeback heralds a thrilling start to the next season, as he arrived clutching a nasty wound and warning Teresa of an approaching threat.

Unfortunately, extensive coronavirus delays have meant the series was considerably pushed back, and Queen of the South’s fifth season won’t surface until, hopefully, later this year.

During the excruciating build-up, fans have had plenty of time to ruminate over the latest twists.

As the hiatus continues, the audience has been pressing showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez for answers regarding James’ return to the series, and she just revealed something big.

Rodriguez posted two pictures from the set yesterday which saw the two stars rehearsing together.

The showrunner shared almost a dozen pictures, but Gadiot and Braga were the only two stars seen playing together.

One picture was captioned: “Rehearsing a scene! Cute matchy-matchy white! Cameo by hand sanitizer.”

In it, the two stars are seen leaning on a table reading over their script, and the two are quite close to each other.

While they are wearing masks and have hand sanitiser on the table too, the pair are keeping a distance from the other person in the shot who is also wearing a face shield.

Could it be that the two stars have taken precautions and can be closer to each other because of the intimate scenes they will have to film with each other?

What is certain is that the two will definitely have some scenes together in the upcoming season which will see their characters reunite, and fans were ecstatic to see Teresa in her ‘Queen’ all-white bodysuit.

In the comments under the posts, one fan asked “Wedding?” and Rodriguez cheekily replied with “Troublemaker”.

Just a few months ago, Rodriguez addressed rumours that James would only be back in a limited capacity, and could even be killed off at the start of season five.

In a Twitter post, he wrote: “I know it’s the election & everybody’s laser-focused on it, but I feel like a lot of #QueenoftheSouth fans only care about one thing.”

Rodriguez denied the speculation and confirmed: “YES, JAMES IS IN S5.”

“U think we’d have him in the S4 finale just to kill him off? Do u think we are barbarians?” she mused. (sic)

Queen of the South season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
