Riverdale: Did Jughead and Betty actually split up in Riverdale?

Riverdale: The CW release dramatic episode teaser

CW series Riverdale is going see a major shake-up next week with its seven-year time jump. The first three episodes from the current run simply tied up the loose ends left over from series four and comprised of the instalments delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Jughead Jones (played by Cole Sprouse), Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) all went their separate ways and failed to reunite a year later – despite making a vow to do so.

Did Jughead and Betty actually split up in Riverdale?

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Riverdale season 5

The episode also saw Betty tearfully admitting to Jughead about kissing Archie, leaving him shocked and upset.

Nonetheless, the foursome patched it up as they prepared to go off in various directions with Jughead, Betty and Veronica destined for college.

Archie chose to enlist in the army after being told he would need to re-sit his senior year in order to graduate high school.

Jughead and Betty admitted they still loved each other and always would, so it looked like the couple known as ‘Bughead’ were still on.

However, Betty later told Jughead she and her mother Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick) would be going on a road trip as they made their way to Yale early.

Veronica and Archie also left town with Jughead becoming the last one out of his friends to go.

From the looks of it, everything was left on a good note but when Jughead returned a year later for the reunion, it was clear things had changed.

Pop Tate (Alvin Sanders) tried to console Jughead and said his friends were possibly too busy to meet up – including Betty.

This would suggest Jughead and Betty had split up but instead of a huge blowout, the end of their romance appeared to be more muted.

Similarly, Archie and Veronica’s split was a lot less dramatic than it might have been without the histrionics of other teen dramas.

Both of them handled it in a very adult manner and remained friends, even trying to pretend things were fine in order to keep Jughead and Betty together.

Sadly, the pressure to pretend became too much and spilled into Jughead and Betty’s romance.

After the seven-year time jump, it’s been confirmed Jughead will be dating someone completely different from Betty with viewers in the dark about the actress taking on the role.

The only thing clear is she will be called Jessica and has been teased as a “hipster train wreck” but she will also be disinterested in Jughead.

According to reports, she will be done with their relationship while Jughead is consumed by the book he is writing.

Although details have been released about Jughead’s new time jump relationship, it’s less clear if Betty has moved on and found love.

Similarly, it’s not clear if Archie also found a new beau after he and Veronica parted ways.

Veronica though will have got married during this time to a Wall Street worker called Chad Gekko (Chris Mason) but their relationship won’t be a happy one either.

Chad will be possessive and jealous about Veronica’s life in Riverdale as well as her friendship with ex-boyfriend Archie.

There’s also been some speculation Archie and Betty could finally get together with some corners of the Riverdale fandom eager for this romance to blossom.
