Samson makes amends with Amelia in Emmerdale as they bond over two tragic deaths

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Emmerdale’s Samson Dingle (Sam Hall) has been an absolute plonker to Amelia Spencer (Daisy Campbell) ever since he discovered he was the father of her baby, Esther.

Rejecting the idea of being a father outright, he made it clear he had no interest in the baby and at one point even tried to get his daughter taken into care.

He did discover a use for Esther when Noah (Jack Downham) came into some money and decided to set up a trust fund for the baby – and Samson set about blackmailing Noah into handing most of the money over to him.

That seemed about as bad as Samson could get, but recently his scathing words to Amelia when she revealed she’d found a breast lump seemed to hit a new low, even for him.

In the wake of this Samson had a heart to heart with his dad Sam (James Hooton), and admitted that Amelia’s health scare took him right back to the trauma of losing his mum, Alice, to cancer when he was a baby. He was terrified the same fate was in store for Esther and, unlike Sam, he wouldn’t be able to step up and be a parent to his child.

While this explains some of Samson’s behaviour, forgiveness is further off down the line as he has a lot of making up to do. He started on this journey in Tuesday (April 18)’s episode by going to talk to Amelia, after Sam prompted hm by saying ‘Sorry’s a good place to start.’

When Samson approached Amelia and Noah, Amelia was too tired and stressed to listen to him, but later Lydia (Karen Blick) told her that Samson was having a hard time coping with his feelings about his mum and asked Amelia to hear him out. ‘He’s nowhere near as tough as he makes out,’ she said.

So Amelia went on her own to talk to Samson, and for probably the first time since Esther was born he was open, sincere and genuine.

He talked about his mum and said that he’d panicked when he heard Amelia could be seriously ill.

Amelia told him she understood how he felt and spoke about her own mum who died in a car crash when Amelia was a child. She said that it made her sad to think that her mum had never known Esther, and she missed her a lot as she struggled with adapting to motherhood herself.

While there’s a new understanding between Esther’s biological parents, it seems that Samson is still happy to let Noah assume the parental role with the baby, telling Amelia that Noah is ‘a really good dad’ who would be there to look after Esther should anything happen to Amelia.

Emmerdale continues Wednesday April 19 at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
