The Blacklist fans have been left waiting for the release of season nine, episode seven. As is typical for the NBC drama, the show is currently going through another mid-season hiatus. However, Raymund ‘Red’ Reddington (played by James Spader) fans have a longer wait than expected. The series will not return until early 2022.

The Blacklist season nine, episode six just aired on December 9, bringing to a close a three-week break from the series.

Fans were overjoyed to have the show back after such a significant time off screens, but there is more bad news in store for them.

The return to season nine will be short, as there is another mid-season hiatus set following the sixth episode.

Episode seven, which currently does not have a title, won’t air until January 6, 2022.

That means there will be an even longer wait than last time, with a whole month in between episodes.

NBC has not released a statement explaining the extended break, though it is most likely a similar season as the last hiatus.

While unconfirmed, the gap between episodes five and six was believed to be the result of avoiding the holiday season, with Thanksgiving dominating the period.

With Christmas and New Year now coming up, NBC will want to avoid missing out on viewers again who will be busy during the festivities.

However, another reason for the delay is likely due to a change in NBC’s overall scheduling, something that is common among all networks.

In the meantime, fans will have a lot to think about following the big reveal in episode six, titled Dr Roberta Sand, PhD.

The biggest shocker of the episode was the discovery that Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq) gave Liz (Megan Boone) the letter to read before her death.

This has disturbed Red, as it shows that Liz betrayed his trust in a way that he never thought she would.

It seems clear that episode seven will therefore focus on Red and Dembe’s friendship, with Red calling into question the relationships he has with those he holds close.

It will likely look back on the pair’s history, recontextualising some crucial events that led up to the death of Liz.

The showrunners have stated that the reasoning for Dembe and Red’s split between seasons eight and nine will not be revealed, yet.

Fans will have to hold on a little longer before getting the biggest questions answered in season nine.

Dr Sand (Enid Graham) is expected to make another appearance in episode seven, with the sixth chapter focusing on Red and Sand working together.

Of course, NBC has revealed little about the episode, with not so much as a title to go on.

Yet, it seems as though it will see Red on the back foot, struggling to accept the truths about his friends.

Fans are holding out hope the task force will be back, just like old times, though it will be a longer wait than they would have hoped.

The Blacklist season 9 continues on January 6 on NBC. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
