Season four of the bleak dystopian drama ended on a depressing note with June bleeding from a potentially fatal gunshot wound. Ahead of The Handmaid’s Tale returning to Hulu and Channel 4 next year, some fans may have uncovered her best chance to escape from Gilead and rescue her daughter.

Hannah Bankole (played by Jordana Blake) hasn’t appeared since the premiere of The Handmaid’s Tale season three, but she plays a vital role in June Osborne’s (Elisabeth Moss) fight for freedom.

In season two, it was revealed June and Luke’s (O-T Fagbenle) young daughter had been taken in by a new family in Gilead’s elite circles.

Later, June reunites with Hannah at her new placement with the Mackenzies, but is warned another unauthorised visit would lead to her execution.

Now June and resistance movement Mayday have started to take the fight to the frontlines, it is being heavily speculated the family could finally reunite when the series returns.

However, there is still a long road ahead, as June will spend much of season four recovering from the bullet wound she sustained at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale’s third season.

After smuggling over 50 children across the border to Canada, June crossed paths with a Gilead guard and was left struggling for life in the arms of her fellow Handmaids.

As production on season four slowly restarts in the midst of significant delays caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, fans are on the edge of their seats to discover what lies ahead.

In the meantime, a new trailer teased an all-out war against the oppressive state of Gilead, and confirmed new episodes would hit screens at some point in 2021.

The most recent update on season four has disturbing implications for the inner-workings of the patriarchal territory, but could also prove to be a way out for Hannah.

Earlier this month, it was confirmed break-out star Mckenna Grace would be joining the cast as an entrapped young bride of a much older Commander.

Deadline broke the news exclusively, and confirmed the 14-year-old Haunting of Hill House star will portray Mrs. Keyes, an intelligent and rebellious teenaged wife who runs a farm in Gilead.

While it isn’t clear how involved Mrs. Keyes will be as the action unfolds in season four, Mckenna Grace has signed on in a recurring role and could therefore play a pivotal part.

Following the news, fans were quick to start speculating how Mrs. Keyes and her older husband will affect June’s ongoing battle against Gilead’s brutal practises.

Over on Reddit, viewers’ comments suggested the new additions to The Handmaid’s Tale in season four could be integral to June’s escape thanks to a surprising connection to her daughter, Hannah.

One insightful fan said: “I guess she’ll really be the only woman left who we know is still being oppressed by the system.

“From the promos it looks like all the other female characters are either now actively fighting, have fled Gilead, or are on the top as Aunts.”

Season three left some gaping holes in Gilead’s defences as most of the known Handmaids fled their captors to join Mayday.

Unfortunately, the sadistic Waterfords (Joseph Fiennes and Yvonne Strahovski) are still using everything in their power to torture June, so it’s very possible Hannah was moved to yet another family.

If Hannah has been sent to Mrs. Keyes’ farm, the young pair could join forces to escape Gilead and finally reunite June with her long lost daughter.

The Handmaid’s Tale season four will be released in 2021 on Hulu and Channel 4.
