'The View': Sunny Hostin Expected to Be Fired After Calling out ABC
Sunny Hostin is one of the co-hosts of The View. The former prosecutor is known for her concise and direct opinions on the show coming from the perspective of a Latina and Black woman. Hostin is also a celebrated author and she recently wrote a book where she called out ABC, the network she works for. The television personality is now revealing she was expecting to get fired from the daytime talk show for what she said.
ABC News executive calls Sunny Hostin ‘low rent’
In June 2020, Yashar Ali wrote an article for HuffPost where they exposed ABC News executive Barbara Fedida. The latter was accused of making racist remarks about Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts and called Hostin “low rent.”
After the news broke, Hostin talked about it openly on The View where she said it had been a “tough weekend” for her reading that piece.
“I was really disappointed and sad and hurt when I heard about the racist comments that were made, allegedly, about me, my colleagues, and my dear friends,” Hostin said at the time.
Fedida was ultimately let go from her position at ABC News following an investigation where it was concluded she did make those remarks.
Sunny Hostin writers forward regarding indignities
Hostin released a memoir in September 2020 called “I Am These Truths: A Memoir of Identity, Justice, and Living Between Worlds.” In the book, the View co-host openly talked about the microaggressions she had felt while working on the show.
While appearing on the Shut Up Evan podcast, Hostin said that “when the scandal broke, all those things that I was thinking had been happening to me, were happening to me.” When she found out about this, she was ready to send her memoir to the publisher.
Hostin explained that she hired a lawyer to see if she could write about it. It was important for her as she wanted to stand up for herself as she advises other people to do.
“I want to write in a forward all these indignities,” Hostin told her lawyer.
However, the lawyer warned Hostin that ABC “could fire” her and may ask her not to come back to the show. The lawyer said that if the latter happened she could probably have “a hell of a lawsuit” or face consequences in the future.
“I wrote the forward fully expecting to be fired and the strangest thing happened,” Hostin recalled.
Sunny Hostin expected to get the ax
The successful author said that the President of Disney called her and said they had read the book. At this point, Hostin said she was expecting them to call her in to cut ties with her.
“I am sorry,” the president said according to Hostin and added, “This type of thing shouldn’t happen and you are a valued member of our family.”
Furthermore, Hostin was not fired from The View, she said they “recalibrated” their relationship with her. In addition, they made Hostin a “voice within the company for diversity and inclusion and equity.”
The View airs weekday mornings at 11 a.m. ET and 10 a.m. CT/PT on ABC.
