The Witcher was a mega-hit for Netflix when it first premiered in 2019, with the platform quickly confirming a sequel season. Based on the series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski and inspired by the video games developed by CD Projeck Red, The Witcher is one of Netflix’s biggest properties. Ahead of the launch of season two, Express.co.uk has all the details on the third series.
When is The Witcher season 3 out?
Season three of The Witcher was renewed earlier this month by Netflix, clearly not letting the delays incurred during season two’s development slow the show down.
During production on season two, there were numerous delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic and Geralt of Rivia star Henry Cavill suffering from a leg injury.
This resulted in a significantly slower turnaround than Netflix originally envisioned, with season one first airing on December 20, 2019.
However, season two is nearly here, with the release date confirmed for December 17, 2021.
As for season three, it is hard to estimate when the season could drop, but it will likely be a much smaller wait this time around.
With restrictions on filming continuing to ease and production already underway, late 2022 seems like a reasonable choice for Netflix.
However, there is always the chance it could be held back further depending on cast schedules.
Regardless, there is still plenty of The Witcher content to come, with a second anime film in development following on from the success of The Witcher: Nightmare of The Wolf.
There is also another series in the works, The Witcher: Blood Origin, which will chart the creation of the first prototype Witcher.
Who will be in the cast of The Witcher season 3?
Who will return to The Witcher season three will depend on the events seen in the second season, but some characters will certainly be back.
Henry Cavill will return as Geralt of Rivia, the Witcher himself, and he will likely be joined by Ciri (played by Freya Allan) and Triss (Anna Shaffer).
Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) will almost certainly re-appear, along with Cahir (Eamon Farren) and Jaskier (Joey Batey).
Tissaia (MyAnna Buring), Istredd (Royce Pierreson), Fringilla (Mini Ndiweni), and Dara (Wilson Radjou-Pujalte) are all also likely to come back.
Is there a trailer for The Witcher season 3?
Currently, there is no trailer for the third season, as season two is still to premiere.
There likely won’t be a trailer until mid-2022, as filming needs to commence before a trailer can be shown.
Netflix could drop a teaser, simply revealing a title and image, but again, it’s likely this would still only come in 2022.
For now, fans can watch the trailer for season two, which looks to be expanding on every element of season one.
What is the plot of The Witcher season 3?
Until the events of season two are revealed, it is impossible to guess what the third season could be about.
At the end of season one, Geralt and Ciri reunited, likely leading to their relationship being explored in season two.
Teasing season two, showrunner Lauren Schmidt told TV Guide: “In Season 2, we’re really digging in with [Ciri] and we’re going to understand her a lot more… where she starts training, where she actually becomes the character that we know from the books and later from the video games, we will see her become that person.”
How this will progress into the third season remains to be seen, as the show has several original novels to pull from.
The Witcher season two will premiere exclusively on Netflix on December 17.
