The sprawling historical series will be moving over to Netflix for a brand new spin-off after the original Vikings wrapped up on Amazon Prime Video last year. With the first trailer releasing on YouTube over the weekend, fans are speculating whether some of their favourite heroes and villains could make another appearance.
Upcoming sequel series Vikings: Valhalla could feature some surprising crossovers with the original History Channel drama.
From original creator Michael Hirst and showrunner Jeb Stuart, the new spin-off will trace the Vikings’ lineage a full century after the first show’s dramatic conclusion in 2020.
Starring newcomer Sam Corlett as Leif Eriksson, Valhalla will feature the famed explorer’s voyage to America nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus.
Although the series’ first follow-up will be set well after the likes of Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmel) were killed, viewers are still holding out hope for a potential crossover.
Moreover, the events of Vikings’ thrilling sixth season finale have given fans more reason to expect some exciting cameos from the classic cast.
One viewer recently pointed out the journey of Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) directly contradicts the events of the new series.
Redditor Kaier_96 commented: “Isn’t Leif Eriksson famous for discovering North America? But didn’t Ubbe already do that?”
At the end of the series, Ubbe, his wife Torvi (Georgia Hirst) and a group of Viking explorers took their first steps on a new continent.
To their surprise, Ragnar’s friend Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) had already been living amongst the Natives for some time, which would make him the first European to step foot in North America.
However, the upcoming spin-off is still expected to posit Leif Eriksson as the first discoverer of the New World.
As Ubbe and Floki were unsure whether they would be able to stake a claim in their newfoundland, it’s possible their settlement was wiped out well before Leif’s arrival.
Plus, another user IndependenceSevere pointed out Ubbe may not have officially ‘discovered’ America.

They replied: “It’s implied Ubbe stayed and never returned, with that in mind it still wouldn’t have been ‘discovered’.”
If Ubbe and the rest of the clan simply lived out the rest of their lives, or were potentially wiped out by the Natives, Leif Eriksson would never have learned of their expedition.
Even so, Vikings still rewrote history with its final season, and there may still be some remnants of Ubbe and Torvi’s final voyage.
Leif could very well travel across the vast continent and stumble onto the remains of Ubbe’s old homestead.
Moreover, Vikings has already established its frequent use of visions and flashbacks throughout the original six seasons.
If the ruins of Ubbe’s settlement are found, this could provide the perfect entrypoint for brief guest appearances from the likes of Jordan Patrick Smith and Georgia Hirst.
Then again, with Valhalla making Netflix the Vikings’ new home, the spin-off may want to distance itself from the original series by focusing on its fresh new cast.
Vikings: Valhalla will be released in 2022 on Netflix.
