TV star Gyles Brandreth, who stars in Channel 4’s Celebrity Gogglebox, spoke candidly about his family and working life. The 73-year-old was quizzed on his current plans and it seems the author has no plans of slowing down anytime soon.

Gyles joined Gaby Roslin, 57, and Ricky Wilson, 43, on Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio today.

The former Tory MP explained that he had a number of gigs lined up after a few of his projects were postponed due to lockdown restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The small-screen star said he would continue to work as he cheekily admitted making money was the way he got to see his children and grandchildren.

Gaby asked: “You’re doing a podcast show – are you still doing your one-man show Break A Leg?”

“I triple booked myself,” Gyles commented, “because everything has been postponed because of the Covid.”

“I’m doing my show, Break A Leg, which is about theatre folk. I’m doing a show promoting my book Odd Boy Out and we’re doing the live podcast.”

The Channel 4 star shared that he is often quizzed about juggling various projects.

He continued: “People say to me, ‘Why Gyles at your age are you doing all of this work?’

“I explain, ‘We need the money.’ We really do.”

“My wife and I have three children and seven grandchildren,” Gyles went on.

“We have discovered over the years that money is what’s keeping us in touch with them.

“That’s why we are plodding around the country – Bath, Chichester, Birmingham, Newcastle.”

Gyles started his career in politics as a Tory MP, but now he works as a writer, broadcaster and actor.

He tied the knot with his wife Michèle Brown in 1973 and the couple have been married for over 50 years.

They also have three grown-up children – Benet, Saethryd and Aphra.

The TV personality is set to go on tour with Countdown’s Susie Dent following the success of their podcast Something Rhymes With Purple.

The pair launched their award-winning podcast back in 2019 where they delve into vocabulary and uncover the hidden origins of language.

Gyles told Express.co.uk: “We do find ourselves talking dirty but only in professional reason.

“We have done a few episodes on rude words, that’s the only time I’ve known Susie to be deliberately [rude].”

He went on to praise his co-star for the way she handles inevitable rude words on Countdown.
