Weird plastic surgery trends boom in lockdown – from lip lifts to golden threads
Plastic surgery demand has skyrocketed during the pandemic in what’s being referred to as the “Zoom Boom”.
And, it’s all because of the rise in video meetings and calls being made by the thousands of Brits working from home.
After all, we don’t usually spend the daily conference staring at our own image.
Ashton Collins, director of Save Face, a UK government-approved register of accredited cosmetic practitioners, told the BBC: "‘Lockdown Face’ has become a thing.
“We were inundated with queries saying, ‘I’ve noticed that my frown line is terrible, that my lips need doing, or my nose is crooked’.”
And, since the lockdown in March, the practice has seen aa surge of 40% more traffic to its site.
So, what are some of the weirdest surgical treatments being requested to plump our lips, smooth our wrinkles and lift sagging areas?
Cagla Dirlik, from the Abnormal Clinic, performs plastic surgery, non-surgical treatments and dental work on her clients in Turkey.
She spoke to the Daily Star about some of the more unusual treatments out there.
Cagla explained: “Some patients don’t want general anaesthetic and so they go for non-surgical treatments [like fillers], but normal surgeries are very in too."
She added: “The most popular surgeries right now are:
“Body re-shaping – which is liposuction and reshaping the whole tummy and back area.
“Liplift surgery – this reduces the space between the nose and lips to lift the lip up.
“Golden threads and France threads are popular too.”
Golden threads and France threads are both a kind of threadlifting where temporary sutures (or threads) are placed under the skin to suspend loose areas and pull the skin back.
This lifts and tightens the face – kind of like a mini face lift.
Cagla added: “Threadlifting is a popular treatment because it’s very easy to do.
“It takes around 30 minutes and can be done with local anaesthetic.”
Another form of lifting procedure is the oddly named spiderweb treatment.
Cagla noted: “Spiderweb treatment is the same like threadlifting (just the threads from spiderweb are shorter than the golden threads).”
This treatment works by adding polydioxone threads under the skin using thin needles and weaving them like a spiderweb.
This re-stimulates the collagen production of the body and lifts problematic areas.
The lifting effect is doubled as the body reacts to the threads and immediately starts producing biological fibroblast, collagen and elastin.
Perhaps one of the most effective treatments growing in popularity right now is the lip lift.
As more and more Brits get fillers to boost their lips, this surgical option can give you a bigger kisser without the “trout pout” effect.
The procedure shortens the philtrum – the area between your upper lip and nose.
This increases the amount of pink tissue that’s visible which makes the lips look fuller and more pronounced.
Cagla said: “Liplift surgery is very popular because it can completely change your face.”
