Stranger Things is one of Netflix’s most popular series and despite the two-year absence, fans can’t wait to head back to Hawkins. The nostalgia-driven and Stephen King-inspired series has been teasing season four for some time now, but when can fans actually sit down and watch the fourth season?

When is Stranger Things season 4 release date?

Stranger Things dropped its third season on July 4, 2019, and since then fans have had to endure a long wait for the follow-up season.

This was in part due to the ongoing coronavirus Pandemic, which made the filming of season four difficult as restrictions held back the scope needed for production.

Many fans were hoping summer 2021 would be the time of Stranger Things return, but sadly the summer has nearly passed without much of an update from Netflix or the showrunners, Matt and Ross Duffer.

The first trailer for season four dropped way back in February 2020 and the last trailer came in May 2021.

One of the directors behind the series, Shawn Levy, has recently given an update for fans holding out hope season four will be released soon.

At the premiere of his latest film, Free Guy, Levy shared some insight on the state of the fourth season’s release date.

“I have been, along with the [Duffer] brothers, we have been kind of tag-teaming it and directing it as recently as now,” Levy explained.

“So not quite done filming. [We’ll be done] imminently. All I can say is by the time this airs, we’ll at least have given the world a ballpark.

“And I’m not allowed to say more. By the time Free Guy comes out, August 13, part of that answer will be known.”

That means fans should expect a major update on the release of season four in the coming days.

Once filming is complete, it will only be a matter of months for Netflix to go through post-production on the season ahead of its premiere.

If filming is nearing completion, it will mean that fans should expect the release date to be late-2021.

Stranger Things has tied its season premieres with holidays in the past, with July 4 and Halloween being notable examples.

It’s unlikely the show will hit a Halloween release this year, so that could put it in line for a Christmas or New Years’ release date.

Nothing is known at this stage, however, as Netflix is yet to comment on the situation.

The May trailer didn’t provide any clues either, with the teaser simply ending by cutting to black without an estimate of a release date.

Fans are still patiently waiting for the release of season four, with many of them taking to the comments of the last trailer shared to YouTube.

One fan commented: “I love how they spend two years on something that I’m probably gonna finish in a day lmao!” (sic)

Another added: “I don’t know about you but I’m ready to binge with a pack of Eggo Waffles.”

“I remember when season 3 came out during the summer of 2019, good old times,” said a third.

Stranger Things is available to watch exclusively on Netflix.
