John Dutton and his family became the targets of a series of horrific assassination attempts in the final episode of Yellowstone’s third season. As production continues in Montana ahead of the show’s return on Paramount and Peacock, perceptive viewers have formulated some convincing theories about the prime suspects.

Wealthy ranch owner John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) faced his lowest moment yet in the finale of Yellowstone season three.

After helping a mother and son on the side of the road, the owner of the largest contiguous ranch in the US was gunned down, his cell phone the only thing stopping a bullet to the heart.

Meanwhile, the fates of his children Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Beth (Kelly Reilly) remain unclear as they were both targeted by attacks in the workplace.

The mastermind behind the attempts on the Duttons’ lives still remains unknown heading into Yellowstone’s fourth season.

Moreover, it is still unclear if these strikes were ordered by the same person, or whether several enemies of the powerful Dutton family orchestrated hits of their own.

The wait for answers continues, but luckily the series has largely managed to escape the most severe coronavirus restrictions and is aiming to be back on screens next year.

During the hiatus, watchful Yellowstone fans have been trying to determine which of the Duttons’ numerous competitors are most likely to be behind the surprise attacks.

Throughout season three, Yellowstone Ranch was plagued by newcomer Roarke Morris (Josh Holloway), a rival ranch owner looking to spread his business onto John Dutton’s territory.

Most of the audience is convinced Morris has something to do with the hits, as the ruthless businessman is out for revenge against the family after Beth decimated the value of his stocks.

However, while Morris remains the prime suspect for the majority of fans, some viewers are convinced he wasn’t working alone.

A recent thread on Reddit suggested an unstoppable partnership against the Duttons may have been forming behind the scenes, unbeknownst to John and his family.

Redditor CCOG84 kicked off the theory, posting: “Okay so the season ended with madness. It’s kinda clear that Roarke is behind the attacks. Hear me out, what if it is actually Rainwater or Angela and Mo?”

Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) is certainly high on fans’ lists, as he’s had it out for the Duttons since the first season.

As the leader of the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, Rainwater wants to claim Dutton’s land as sacred territory as he insists it was most likely stolen from his ancestors.

This fan also suggested Rainwater’s secretive attorney Angela Blue Thunder (Q’orianka Kilcher) could be in on the job, as well as his stone cold driver and assistant, Mo (Mo Brings Plenty).

Now all eyes are on Morris’s trade war with the Duttons, Rainwater could have easily swept in to take matters into his own hands without any suspicion.

The viewer clarified: “I mean she kinda made a solid point, now is the perfect time to attack him because everyone will think Raorke and his people did it. That would be an awesome twist.”

While Angela Blue Thunder appears to be striking up an alliance with the Duttons, she privately shares Rainwater’s belief that the ranch should be given back to the local American Indians.

The Duttons have made plenty of enemies over the course of three seasons, so Yellowstone fans will have to tune in next year to discover who was really behind the attacks.

Yellowstone will return with season 4 in 2021 on Paramount and Peacock.
