Keeping down there in top shape is important, so a gynecologist has revealed what women should be avoiding if they want to keep their vagina healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n Gynecologist Dr Staci Tanouye, who is based in Florida, posted her now-viral TikTok, explaining what she would recommend steering clear of.<\/span><\/p>\n ‘I would never use any scented or fragranced pads or tampons,’ the doctor began.<\/p>\n ‘And yes, this includes essential oils.’<\/p>\n Gynecologist Dr Staci Tanouye revealed what women should be avoiding if they want to keep their vagina healthy<\/p>\n Staci explained essential oils were ‘just like any other scent – a constant irritant.’\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘So it can be irritating to the skin, especially the delicate vulvar skin. Do not do it,’ she urged.<\/p>\n The\u00a0gynecologist then said to always check product labels, warning followers that she had seen some products labeled as ‘sensitive,’ but they still had essential oils in them.<\/p>\n ‘That is a no-go for me,’ she declared in the clip, which has been viewed more than 539,000 times.<\/p>\n Next, Staci recommends staying away from wet wipes, explaining the same rules for using on the face applies to the vagina.\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘You don’t use them on your face\u00a0<\/span>because it strips away the natural protectant oils that protect your skin on your face,’ she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘It does the same thing to the vulva – and the vulva is far more sensitive.’<\/p>\n The doctor went on the explain that constantly using wipes on the sensitive area of the labia was\u00a0stripping away\u00a0<\/span>the natural oils that protected that skin and kept it healthy.<\/p>\n She recommends avoiding scented or fragranced pads or tampons, essential oils and\u00a0boric acid suppositories<\/p>\n Overall she said to always check product labels to see what they have in them before using them<\/p>\n ‘Don’t do it. Toss them,’ she told her 1.4 million followers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Lastly, Staci says boric acid suppositories should be avoided.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n ‘We use boric acid suppositories in very specific situations of recurrent and resistant bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections,’ she explained.<\/span><\/p>\n According to Staci, they are often used when people want to feel ‘fresh,’ or if they think that it’s rebalancing your pH – but tend to be overused.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘I would never use boric acid suppositories,’ she assured followers.\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘I just wouldn’t use them like social media tells you to use them.’<\/p>\n Staci reminded followers that boric\u00a0\u00a0acid suppositories should be used in very specific situations, such as\u00a0recurrent and resistant bacterial vaginosis\u00a0<\/span>or yeast infections\u00a0for the purpose of destroying the overlying biofilm.<\/p>\n ‘Just using boric acid suppositories here and there as needed because you think you need to is not doing what you think it’s doing,’ she said.<\/p>\n Followers flocked to the comments to share their thoughts about the products to avoid.<\/p>\n Followers flocked to the comments to share their thoughts about the products to avoid<\/p>\n Products I would never use as a gynecologist! Seek professional care.’<\/p>\n It’s not the first time social media has weighed in on what products are best.\u00a0<\/p>\n In 2019, California-based Dr Jen Gunter spoke out in a now-viral Twitter post urging women not to put garlic in their vagina to treat yeast infections.<\/p>\n The rant was in response to an old wives’ tale, which recommends putting a clove inside the vagina for up to three days\u00a0<\/p>\n There are no studies to support the claim garlic has antifungal properties \u2013 apart from in a petri dish \u2013 and it could be a serious risk for further infections, Dr Gunter said.<\/p>\n The vagina is the ‘perfect’ environment for the botulism bacteria to grow, which can be life-threatening and lead to paralysis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
