Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andre Braugher died from lung cancer, his publicist has revealed.

The actor passed away at the age of 61 on Monday – when it was said he had been struggling with a brief illness. Now, according to reports, his publicist Jennifer Allen has given the cause of death as lung cancer – saying he had been diagnosed with the disease a few months ago.

Andre was well-known for his portrayal of Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, as well as for playing Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street. He told the New York Times in 2014 that he stopped smoking and drinking years ago.

But Andre rarely discussed his private life and his death was unexpected for many of his co-stars. His friends, colleagues and family were left heartbroken by his death, with many taking to social media to express their grief.

His Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-star Terry Crews wrote: "Can't believe you're gone so soon. I'm honoured to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent.

“This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you.

“Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like."

Another Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-star, Melissa Fumero, wrote in tribute to Andre: "I will remember all the advice you gave me. I will remember all the times we laughed because your laugh was one of the all time greatest laughs to have ever existed.

“I will remember the deep love and loyalty you had for your family. I will remember it every time I ask work to make time for me to be with my family…I will remember so much."

Before his death, Andre discussed how he spent more time focusing on his family than career – but did so without regret.

He told Variety in 2020: "It’s been an interesting career, but I think it could have been larger. I think it could have spanned more disciplines: directing, producing, all these other different things. But it would have been at the expense of my own life."

Andre was born in Chicago and graduated from Stanford University before attending The Juilliard School for drama in New York. He won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series thanks to his role in Homicide. His film debut, meanwhile, was in Glory alongside Denzel Washington.

Andre is survived by his wife, actress Ami Brabson, whom he met on the set of Homicide, and his three sons.
