Jerry Hall says dad ‘gambled away their farm’ as she speaks out on childhood
Newlyweds Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall host celebration
Mick Jagger’s ex Jerry Hall has candidly opened up about her early life before fame as she spoke of her challenging upbringing.
The 67-year-old was born in Gonzales, Texas, to parents Marjorie, a medical records librarian, and John P. Hall, who was a staff sergeant under General Patton during the Second World War.
Life as a youngster, she spilled, “wasn’t rosy” as she reflected on her dad’s trauma post-war and how smelling her mum’s Coco Chanel scent inspired her modelling career.
The mother-of-four revealed: “My father had come back from the war traumatised.
“He had nightmares and he gambled away our farm. But that bottle of scent was the start of a dream for me; I knew I had to enter the beautiful and intoxicating world of fashion.”

Jerry did in fact pursue her dream and fled, what she has previously called a violent home, aged 16, behind her parents’ back.
In past interviews, the former model has said her father used to be violent towards her and her sisters and once described him as “volatile”, which she believes was caused by the strain of his job and his own difficult upbringing.
“Horrible things happened to my father. He had to release people from a prison of war camp and found 18,000 dead bodies.
“It is a terrible thing to be living in fear and he would abuse us verbally too,” she told The Guardian of her late dad.
Not enjoying life at home, she fled to Paris on her own with just a backpack, a sleeping bag and no money, where she was later discovered by Chanel.

“I had missed Coco by a year – she had died in 1971 – but her presence still hung over her boutique and apartments on Rue Cambon,” she added to Radio Times Magazine in their latest issue.
“There I learnt to love the glamour of Coco Chanel’s designs but also to understand their liberating impact for women,” she added, referencing how the designer got rid of constricting long skirts and tight waists, and instead, “made clothes that were very practical but elegant at the same time”.
By 1977, Jerry was at her peak and had been on 40 magazine covers including Italian Vogue and Cosmopolitan.
In the same year, she married Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, which lasted 22 years.
