Dawn French admits being ‘ashamed’ after awkward Madonna encounter
Dawn French’s ‘disappointing’ encounter with the Queen Mother
Dawn French revealed she walked away feeling ashamed after meeting singing sensation Madonna.
The 66-year-old appeared on Friday’s instalment of This Morning when she recalled the awkward encounter with hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary.
Speaking about her new memoir, which is full of the comedian’s mistakes, mishaps and mess-ups throughout the years, the hosts wanted to know some more hilarious tales from her past.
With Madonna’s UK tour kicking off this weekend, Dawn confessed she’s always loved the 80s icon and used her as a joke in her old stand-up show with Jennifer Saunders.
She confessed: “Whenever we were doing our show we would always ask her to come and be a guest. She would always refuse.”

Admitting that if people didn’t turn up, they’d then become the butt of the joke, Dawn revealed she dressed up as her with Jennifer.
She added: “I did meet her once though, I did turn into a bit of a- twit, rhymes with fat, in front of her. It was so pathetic!
“She did a stand-up show in Australia, extraordinary. It finished at like two o’clock in the morning and I got a message saying she’d like to say hello.”
As Dawn waited another hour for her to come outside, the 66-year-old shared that the meeting didn’t go as planned.

Dawn continued: “I was very excited to meet her, I said, ‘Oh hi!’ and she went, ‘Er, we’ve met before’.
“I said, ‘No we haven’t?’ and she went, ‘Yeah, we’ve met before’”.
The comedian reiterated once more to Madonna they hadn’t met, but the 80s icon was adamant they had.
In the end, Dawn agreed with her as she admitted: “I just completely caved!
“I turned into a blubbering, blubbering wreck of a person.
“I had nowhere to go, we’re either going to have a Madonna-off or you just give in and I gave in.
“I came away feeling quite ashamed of myself after that, feeling an eejit in front of Madonna.”
This Morning continues weekdays on ITV from 10am
