I’m A Celebrity injuries – Dec’s ‘agony’ to star quitting after hospital dash

One of the things we love most about I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! is the challenges its celebrity cast is put through.

Whether it be physical exertion, facing phobias or eating the most disgusting sources of "food" known to man, each unfortunate contestant is pushed to their limit. This year's series promises to be no different and just as Matt Hancock discovered to his frustration last year, Nigel Farage is likely find himself the subject of millions of viewer votes to carry out the most gruesome of tasks.

It's not all fun and games in the jungle, however, as some past contestants will certainly testify. For sometimes on the ITV show things can go horribly wrong in injury, hospital admissions and the premature ending of celebrities journeys.

Now, on the eve of series 23, which begins in Australia on Sunday (November 19), we take a look back at some of the grisliest injuries that celebrities have sustained while filming the reality show.

John Barrowman

Back in 2018, John Barrowman was rushed to hospital with a "serious injury" following a nasty fall in camp. The 56-year old stumbled as he walked over to wash up the pots with eventual winner, Harry Redknapp and screamed out in pain.

As he whimpered on the floor, fellow campmates Nick Knowles and Malique Thompson-Dwyer helped whisk him away to jungle medics who advised him to go for an X-ray. John spent the night in isolation but thankfully returned the following day after being diagnosed with a sprained ankle.

A source told The Mirror at the time: "John is back in camp and he was very keen to go back on the show as soon as he knew nothing was broken. We have heavily strapped his ankle for now and will be keeping a close eye on him. This was not a case of trying to persuade him to stay or forcing him to go back, he was desperate to get back in there and carry on with his jungle adventure."

James Haskell

James Haskell has been in the news for all the wrong reasons of late, following a well-publicised split from Chloe Madeley. He was unfortunate in 2019 too, suffering an horrific burn after he scolded himself with boiling hot water.

The rugby star was carrying a bucket of hot water over to his camp with reality star Caitlyn Jenner at the time but he slipped on the way and the steaming hot water poured all over his boot. James, who had earlier sparked outrage from the viewers at home over his treatment of campmate Andrew Maxwell, cried out in pain as he rushed to take off his footwear.

Despite his blind panic, the star was unable to get the boot off in time and his foot was completely burnt which blistered at the top. He was also seen by medical professionals on site who treated the injury before he joined the rest of his contestants in the main camp.

He later told his fellow campers: "The hot water just slipped out and poured right into my boot. I couldn’t get my boot off in time and it’s blistered the front of my foot".

Kimberley Davies

Way back in 2005 when the show was still in its infancy, former Neighbours actress Kimberley Davies suffered a fractured rib after jumping a whopping 15 feet from a helicopter and hitting a floating target in the water during a Bushtucker Trial. The blonde bombshell was quickly rushed to hospital via an air ambulance after she was assessed by rescue divers and told she may have a hairline fracture.

Following her injury, ITV insisted producers had taken every precaution for the challenge as Granada added that Kimberley had been given a full safety briefing before she started the trial. In a statement, the television company said: "Granada takes the health and safety of all celebrities and crew extremely seriously and, as is the case with all Bushtucker Trials, a comprehensive risk assessment had been carried out.

"The helicopter contractor has undertaken somewhere in the region of 3,000 such jumps without prior incident and have Civil Aviation Safety Authority approval. The contractor does this activity on a regular basis, training divers to jump from helicopter used in the Bushtucker Trial is typically that used for a person undertaking their first jump."

After she was looked over by doctors the star bravely returned to camp, but several hours in she dramatically left the show because she was in too much pain.

Joel Dommett

It’s not just the campmates who get injured on the set of the show as comedian Joel Dommett found to his displeasure after a sign smashed into his head as he hosted Extra Camp back in 2018. During a windy rehearsal run through of the show in the jungle, props began to blow behind the presenters including a wooden sign which hit him in the back of the head.

The incident left the star dazed and confused and when the medical team checked him over, they noticed his skin had split with an open wound on the back of his skull. A source told The Mirror at the time: "The sign hit Joel with some force and he was rushed to hospital, he needed seven stitches and was given the day off to recover."

Despite the concerning injury, the comic laughed off the experience and posted several snaps of his head bandaged up and reassured his loyal legion of fans that everything was okay.

Dec Donnelly

The same applies to presenters too it seems. Last year hosts Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly revealed they're unlikely to take on the celebrity cyclone trial ever again – after the latter was injured so badly he was in agony and needed six months of physio.

The favourite trial sees the final four contestants try to climb a slippery slope and stay in their rightful place with a giant star. To make it harder, there are wind machines and giant balls and paint bombs to contend with.

After dozens of fans asked online if they would ever have a go themselves, the double act explained they had taken it on a decade ago but it didn't go according to plan. Ant said: "We're doing the Celebrity Cyclone today. It's always fun to do, but it takes a while to do. It takes a long time to get everything set up and get all the paint bombs set up and all the sludge and the slime. Yeah, it takes a long time but it is fun, the most fun.

"Everybody who watches the show always wants to give it a go. We've actually done it in the past. We've done the trial. We did it for charity years ago, didn't you pop your shoulder?" Dec replied: "Yeah I did. I ended up in physio for six months afterwards. But it was great fun."

Janice Dickinson

This year's All Stars version of the show in South Africa didn't go to plan for Janice Dickinson, meanwhile, as the former supermodel was reportedly rushed to hospital after sustaining head injuries following a fall on set while she was looking for the toilet in the middle of the night.

A source told The Sun on Sunday at the time that she tripped over a cable in the dark at the camp and was found with "blood gushing from her head". The source said the moment was "terrifying" and the campmates ran towards the noise and found Janice face down and one of the campmates stepped in to ask everybody to stand back and give her space.

Production crew then came out and immediately called for a medic, it was claimed. The source added: "The injuries were severe enough that she had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. There were fears that she had suffered a cracked skull but she was later given the all-clear by doctors."

Until then, Janice was said to have been "doing great" and was a "really good laugh". They added that she must have been one of the favourites to win, but had "no choice" but to miss the rest of the competition.
