Justin Timberlakes two word Britney comment as he breaks silence on her explosive memoir
Justin Timberlake said “no disrespect” before singing Cry Me a River live on stage – in an apparent reference to his ex Britney Spears' new memoir.
The 42 year old singer, formerly a member of boyband NSYNC, reportedly made the comment before launching into his hit song at Fontainebleau in Las Vegas this week. The track caused a stir when it was released in 2002 – eight months after Justin and Britney split – as it implied that she had been unfaithful to him when they were together.
Lyrics in the song included: "You don't have to say, what you did, I already know, I found out from him.” And further fuelled was added to fire when a Britney lookalike was cast in the music video for the song.
But, with his two-word “no disrespect” comment, Justin appeared to be attempting to put any ill feeling behind them – especially with their past being brought up again recently in Britney’s memoir The Woman in Me, which was published at the end of October.
Britney, 42, has now admitted to cheating on Justin with choreographer Wade Robson during their relationship, which began in 1999. She wrote in her memoir: "We were out one night and we went to a Spanish bar.
“We danced and danced. I made out with him that night."
The Toxic singer said, "with that one exception”, she was otherwise faithful to Justin. She also wrote that she believed he was also unfaithful.
“There were a couple of times during our relationship when I knew Justin had cheated on me,” she said. “There were rumors about him with other dancers and groupies.”
Britney also revealed in the bestselling book that she became pregnant with their child but decided to have an abortion.
“Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy,” she claimed. “He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”
Justin, who now shares children Silas, eight, and Phineas, three, with wife Jessica Biel, has not yet publicly commented on the contents of the memoir. According to reports, there is a chance he could respond in a new song with his long-time collaborator, music producer Timbaland.
A source told the Daily Mail: “Timbaland actually wants to use all this energy and get Justin in the studio to write a song about it all, to give his response to all the haters.”
However, Justin did issue a public apology to Britney in 2021 after her abortion first came to light and his treatment of her was put under the spotlight in the Framing Britney Spears documentary. In the same statement, he also apologised to Janet Jackson over their infamous Superbowl halftime performance in 2004, when he tore off part of her corset to reveal her breast.
In an Instagram post in 2021, Justin reflected: “I am deeply sorry for the time in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right. I care for and respect these women and I know I failed.
“I also feel compelled to respond, in part, because everyone involved deserves better and most importantly, because this is a larger conversation that I wholeheartedly want to be part of and grow from.”
