Antiques Roadshow guest vows to ‘lose weight’ after staggering Rolex valuation
Antiques Roadshow expert Richard Price left his guest staggered after revealing the value of his Rolex watch on the BBC One programme.
Richard began: “Really, it says it all on the dial, doesn’t it? Rolex Oyster Perpetual, which means self-winding. And the model is the Explorer.
“Now bearing in mind it’s probably older than you, is it something you’ve bought or been given recently?”
The guest explained the watch belonged to his stepfather who gave him the item before he died. The serial number was just in the region of 1.3 million.
For Rolex, that equates to a production date of 1959. The expert asked the guest if that “fits in” to which he replied: “Yeah, that fits in.”

The guest added: “He said it was the late ’50s when he got it.” The expert continued to gush over the watch, describing it as “lovely”.
“It really is lovely,” Richard shared. “But the hands, are almost certainly service replacements.”
He proceeded to bring out a tiny torch which he shone on the face of the watch to look at the “beautiful tritium numerals” under the light.
However, the replacement parts did not shine in the same way, which told the expert all of the hands were service replacements.

The guest admitted his stepfather never told him how much he paid for the Rolex, and he had no idea how much it was worth today.
Richard shared: “I think you are going to be very grateful, for what he has left you because in today’s market is between, I reckon, £7,000 and £9,000.”
The staggered guest replied: “Wow, that’s a lot of money.” Richard added: “It’s a lovely thing to remember him by and it’s also a fabulous watch to wear.”
Holding his wrist, the guest laughed: “I’ll have to lose a bit of weight on my wrist!”
The guest did not reveal if he was going to auction the watch or keep it for himself to wear.
The most expensive Rolex ever sold is Paul Newman’s Daytona which auctioned for a record-breaking $17,752,500.
