Strictly’s Bobby Brazier blames dad Jeff for ‘problem’ with show
Bobby Brazier made a surprising confession during an interview on Tuesday's It Takes Two – he has never watched Strictly Come Dancing before.
Host Fleur East couldn't help but question the 20-year-old EastEnders actor about his lack of experience with the popular show.
Fleur began the conversation with a playful tone: "Before we get stuck in, we need to discuss something very, very serious. Bobby, you've never watched Strictly. Explain yourself!"
The EastEnders theme tune added a humorous touch as Bobby, seemingly embarrassed, covered his face with his hands.
In response to Fleur's questioning, Bobby admitted: "I don't know what to say." Fleur, not letting him off the hook, asked: "How has this happened?"
Bobby explained: "I've never owned a TV, that's it. It's always been the punishment at home that you are not allowed to watch TV. So I guess I never had an attachment to watching telly growing up."
He cheekily placed the blame on his father, Jeff Brazier, 44, saying: "Look, it's my dad's fault."
It's clear that Bobby's Strictly journey has become a family affair, as his father proudly supported him during his debut on the show.
During their first performance, Bobby and his professional partner Dianne Buswell, 34, earned a commendable score of 29 from the judges for their Foxtrot routine.
Their dance to McFly’s It’s All About You left the judges impressed, with comments like Craig Revel Horwood praising Bobby for his “frame” and “storytelling.” Fellow judge Motsi Mabuse said: "You gave us goosebumps,” while head judge Shirley Ballas added: "It was absolutely beautiful, it was exceptional."
However, the person most touched by Bobby’s performance was his dad, Jeff, who was seen in the audience with tears in his eyes. As Bobby chatted with hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly, they pointed out his dad's emotional reaction, to which Bobby jokingly responded: “Not again!”
It wasn’t that long ago Jeff was again left emotional by his son who won an NTA for Best Rising Star on 6 September. Bobby scooped up the award at the O2 for his part as Freddie Slater in EastEnders.
As Bobby went up to accept his NTA, he gave a moving acceptance speech about Jeff supporting him over the years, moving him to tears.
Bobby said: “It has little to do with me and everything to do with my dad. For over the last 20 years, I’ve constantly heard him say, ‘Because I can’.”
This weekend, Bobby and Dianne will be performing the Charleston to the song "Do Your Thing" by Basement Jaxx.
Although Bobby has been a favourite to win this year's series for weeks, the top spot was clinched by ex-EastEnders and Casualty star Nigel Harman, who leads with an impressive Pasodoble performance alongside Katya Jones.
When asked about being a favourite to win, Bobby humbly stated: “They have no reason to think that – it’s only because I’m young, and apparently quite fun.”
