Why Grace Dent really quit I’m A Celebrity as she’s forced to leave the jungle

As Grace Dent's early I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! departure hits the headlines, there was an air of inevitability about the whole thing.

A show spokesperson confirmed on Monday: "Unfortunately Grace Dent has left the show on medical grounds. She has been a great campmate and will be missed by her fellow celebrities and viewers alike."

It comes after viewers became concerned for the food critic on Sunday evening when Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly revealed she'd been voted by the public to take part in the Down the Tubes trial; she stayed almost entirely mute in this scene.

One viewer posted on social media: "I'm getting worried for Grace", while another added: "A bit worried about Grace Dent."

A third predicted: "Honestly think Grace might leave some time next week" as a fourth commented: "I can see Grace leaving the camp soon, she looked so depressed and zoned out."

Recognised for her time as The Guardian's restaurant critic between 2012 and 2017, as well as regular appearances on MasterChef UK, the 50 year old admitted prior to parachuting into the jungle that she was full of dread.

"I am especially dreading being really hungry because I tend to eat four or five posh meals out a week because I am a restaurant critic," said Grace at Brisbane Airport earlier this month, before revealing how she'd been dining out as much as possible lately.

"My flight was amazing, I feel very well rested. I've eaten very well. I've been stocking up on delicious tastes because I'm wondering when I'm gonna taste them again," the star shared.

"I think it's going to be a real challenge. For the last week I've been eating in the most wonderful restaurants in London, you know, five-course dinners, all the wonderful foods that London offers. So, I think it's maybe gonna be a bit of a shock to my system."

Ahead of living alongside the many creepy-crawlies, Grace suggested she'd stick to the periphery of the camp in order to let the younger contestants hog the limelight.

"My approach these days is to listen and sit back for a bit. Joining in, and shouting, and adding to drama is not achieving anything.

"But what I do hope is that I'm a little bit older than a lot of the people," she continued. "I hope that I can listen intently and try and get to grips with what is actually happening."

Grace's screen time was noticeably reduced after backing away from political debates with Nigel Farage.

The last time we saw her was during last Friday's Bushtucker Trial – the Touchdown of Terror – but a sense of defeat was all over her face as she confessed to her co-stars: "I've had enough. I've completely had enough. I just want to go home."

This Morning presenter Josie Gibson tried her best to pick Grace's spirits up, but her words fell on deaf ears with the latter sharing in the Bush Telegraph: "I haven’t got a lot left in me at the moment. I'm just keeping on a face for everybody."

I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! airs on ITV and ITVX.
